Guys if they total out the car it will go to them, then sold off. I'm not going to be parting out the car, what a Pita! I will try to let you guys know if I get any info about who gets it. There is a chance they will try to fix it too.. We shall know on Monday hopefully.

Did the battery cutoff pyro also blow in the accident? That's a $600 part by itself. Plus if the airbags went I bet the seatbelt tensioner pyros went too. Those are also about $500 if I recall. You can tell by if the seat belt buckle receivers are about 3 inches lower than they use to be.

How are the front fenders, any damage? What about the motor? Has it shifted rear ward? In a front end crash bmw engines are designed to shift rear and down to absorb the energy. If this happened game over its likely totaled as you'll need a new front subframe and motor mounts along with other fun parts.

I rebuilt an e46 in my garage one winter with similar damage, hence my limited knowledge here.

don't have them give you an estimate until car is fully taken apart to see extent of damage...my car had way more damage as repairs went along...total was almost double the original estimate...car would have been a total loss for sure if they had known that from the beginning...I could see where auto body shops would have incentive to keep repair bill small at first to get started and then pile it on when you can't really stop.

No. If it's totaled then they get the car. I thought I explained this already.

Bit of an update, without taking the bumper off we're at 12k in damages right now and at this amount it will be fixed. They will disassemble the bumper and rad support and write up the remainder of the damages. We shall see how far that goes.

If they do decide to fix it, how can I calculate the diminished value?
Who's gonna want to pay full price for a car that says it was in an accident with 2 airbags deployed?

You can either pay a company $300 to do it for you, and they calculate everything. Or get the car appraised after the car has been fixed, mention an accident and have them write up what the car would be worth without it as well. Then you go after the insurance. It all depends who's fault it is though. Some states allow you to file a diminished value against your own insurance if you were at fault.

Well apparently they've disassembled it but there's still no secondary estimate and I cant get in touch with the adjuster. Apparently geico has already cut a check to them.
12k is just not enough to get it totaled. I guess I'll have them fix the car and then dump it asap for something else. Probably not a bmw.. I got that tshirt already.

yeah a lot of insurance companies want to see 70-75% loss before being considered a totaled car.

So in your state, can you file for DV against your own insurance company if accident was your fault???.

I am guessing DV(even if you get this) will get you only halfway to the reality of how much it really depreciated...and its not just your accident, the carbon issues and a lot of cars coming off of lease where cars are just being turned in are contributing to market prices quite significantly right now.

Even without considering accident, our cars have depreciated by 6K over the past year...this is a pretty high number...not sure if I have ever owned a used car that depreciated by this much in 1 year before.

I will predict that by the time they are done fixing your car, the total bill will be 16-18K.

I spoke with the body shop and they were at 16k now with the supplemental and I dont think they were quite done. The adjuster will follow up with them tomorrow and determine what's going on with it.. hopefully they total it and I dont have to mess around with all the bs

If I were you, I would print out some 335D's for sale on AutoTrader...there are a lot of 335D's for sale for low to mid 20's...esp. if you're car isn't fully loaded and without CPO...print that out for your adjuster and if cars similar to yours selling for 22-24K and your bill gets up to 18K, then a total loss makes a lot more sense.

With that many airbags deployed its usually totaled on the spot so I'm surprised they are crunching the numbers. Perhaps every insurance company is different. Eitherway I would sell it if they end up fixing it.

Final numbers came in around 16.3k
Adjuster is trying to get a salvage value and current value of the car, if the numbers work out they'll total it, if not... meh

Your insurance company isn't Nationwide by any chance is it? When I was picking up my car at the body shop there was a 135i that had similar damage and it was considered a total and was towed away. Then it came back and was ordered to be repaired because some new adjuster said that it would be cheaper to repair. Ended up costing $10K more than the total.
