Thinking about getting a 335d... Questions
I wandered in here from the e92 M3 forum because my girlfriend is looking at picking up a 335d. I did some browsing and saw some threads about the exhaust liquid reservoirs becoming clogged and another about carbon buildup in the intake manifold.
Would buying a used 335d with about 30,000 miles on the clock be a wise idea? I'm hoping to find one with about a year and a half of warranty/maintenance left on it, but in case I find a deal on one with six months left on the warranty- is maintenance or problems a big deal? What are some common issues or good things to address when looking for a good pre-owned 335d? Thanks!

It's the frontier forum guy, lol.
I would just find a 335d with a CPO warranty, and one that has been taken care of. There really isn't too much to look out for in terms of carbon build up and stuff at only 30,000 miles.

Besides the fact that its ridiculous to have to even smog a diesel, I suppose there are more smog components.

Smog is just a visual inspection. It does cost, but there are no rollers and sniffers in the tailpipe.

+1 on finding a CPO 335d but not necessarily true of having noting to worry about at 30k. Mine had carbon build up at around 26k and I am the first owner and take care of my car. Hate to say it but its like rolling the dice with our cars great car but get the most warranty you can just in case.

Got ours with 33K on the clock last fall. Now at 42K. Have warranty until 55K then an extended (3rd party) to 100K. Can things go wrong? Sure. Do I worry about it? Not so much, as I drive the car, I like the car, and I will pay for the car as needed.
I will stay on top of things and tend to do my own maintenance on my cars for the most part (basic stuff I am fine letting the dealer do: it keeps the relationship going). When BMW does release a cleaning processes I probably will pay to have the lead tech take a peak at my intake and such to see how the build up is. Car seems to run well (had one SES issue which was likely DEF related) but maybe its running a bit slow due to carbon. Yeah. That's right. I should mention that at the next service visit - b |

Doesn't help that we Californians have to get it checked once a year vs. once every two years for gassers.

FWIW, I have almost 75k on mine now (geez that number is going up fast) and no carbon issues. EGR block off IMO is a long term reliability must. If you dont actively prevent buildup you will end up cleaning it out.
diesel smog in CA is biennial, just like gassers. For some reason we dont get the 6 year new car exemption though. If you have a check every year it would have to be a local program. |

PS my d just clocked 108k miles yesterday, i change oil at 12k intervals and once went 15k. IMHO engine break in may be more critical than short oil change intervals with modern oils. Oh and i also always use castrol LL-04 oil. |

According to this you are right that the exemption is for six years. If the vehicle weighs more than 14,000 lbs and is non-resident (whatever that is), then it does not benefit from the six year exemption on smog checks. Maybe "non-resident" means is was bought out of state.

that IS the smog check for diesel, essentially. There is supposed to be a smoke check and visual but I think most smog techs recognize those are pointless on a totally stock vehicle

So he was presumably checking for fault codes? If we have an old battery we get a fault code. Does anybody know if the techs "know" which fault codes indicate a problem with smog check? Or do they just fail the car if any fault code comes up?

I dont believe there are exceptions for ANY codes. You can fail for a transmission code if it shows up on the scanner. That said, some techs will ignore it if they see that it has nothing to do with emissions. On a chevy 2500 the torque converter sometimes will drain if parked on a slope resulting in low trans fluid pressure codes, you can and will fail from that if the tech doesnt read it and ignore it.
