Has anyone else experience problems with their air mass sensor? My 2009 335d SES light came on and I found out that the air mass sensor had failed. I waited 3 weeks for the part to arrive from Germany and had it replaced yesterday. This is weird because I just had it replaced at 46k miles and this happened again at 68k miles. Is it common for this sensor to fail so often?

Do you have an aftermarket filter? Generally thats the main cause of failures. I havnt heard of many others failing. Im at 46k and seems to be good (Knock on wood).

That's a pretty expensive part.

This was the first part on my car to experience a failure and it happened before the warranty expired.

Mine apparently went out, they replaced it, same exact code came again a week later. I said screw it and cleared the code.

No aftermarket filter. I only use BMW OEM parts.

My 335d is CPO, so the warranty covered the cost. And since the part was replaced about a year ago, I also didn't have to pay the $50 CPO deductible.

I started keeping track of everything that gets replaced, this way they don't charge me for the CPO deductible. They tried to charge me the $50 fee, but once I mentioned to them that this part was replaced before, they waived the fee.

wow, that is pretty expensive part to fail so often. I had mine replaced a week ago as well. Now that $50 fee, you would think their computer would tell them it was just replaced so they don't try to scoop extra $50 from you. I guess I will have to start keeping track on what and when was replaced to protect myself as well

Mass Air Flow sensor went out on mine before Christmas. ONly waited 2 weeks for it. Intake Temp sensor was replaced at same time.

SInce then, head was sent out for cleaning (end Jan). When i got it back (3.5 weeks later), it was running rough and SES light came on. Brought it in, and they said something about engine adaptations. Got it back and it still ran rough. Brought it back in about 6 days later because of rough run and they ended up replacing injector #1. Got it back, still ran rough. Next day SES. Brought it back in. Haven't heard the news yet.

FormerRotor, I will be looking for the zero quantity adaptation fault. I should hear from them on Monday. It seems like replacing DDE fixes that issue. Since i have had the head cleaned already, if I can get the DDE taken care of, i may drive up to Canada for some work i've read about in other threads.

I had mine fail at 76k miles, covered under CPO.
No warning, just driving along and got the reduced engine power notice.

Dealer also replaced the UREA tank at the same time related to a reoccurring SES

My air mass sensor failed at 46k miles and 68k miles. My urea tank was also replaced at 65k miles. They also replaced the EGR valve at 67k miles.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace a failed air mass sensor if the car is not covered by warranty or CPO warrnty?

Its $350 on bmwmercedesparts.com. I wonder if the rockauto part is oem or what? If you could find the matching sensor not in a tube or in a tube for another car we might find a cheaper one. I've seen others where the exact same sensor in a different tube is used in dozens of models and brands, since the programming and conversion all takes place in the dde its all interchangeable

Simple to do yourself. I have not looked at the screws but usually the sensor is just held in the tube with two torx screws. The tube and sensor are right next to the air filter box on our cars
