Wouldn't that cause the fuse in the tap to go out? Since it will receive higher amps than it's specified for?
I think I'll try #77 since AC only runs if the engine is running, which is what I'm after.
Thanks again.

As for that F steering wheel, I saw your posts on the other thread.
That's interesting. I guess similar concept to the controller board I got for the iDrive controller.

I saw Olaf's post that all steering wheels from the same era would work.
Anyway, something to think about when I can have a moment for myself (and money of course).

The fuse tap has two slots. One for the original fuse and one for the added tap.

Update:

For those doing this in an automatic car without Smoker's Package (ie. no cigarette lighter socket and ashtray in front of the shifter), you can tap the power into the red/yellow striped wire going into the gear shift indicator panel. This runs off the JBE and is fused at 10A. The only downside is that it can stay powered as long as the shifter light stays on, so be sure your heated wheel is off when exiting to prevent excess battery drain. I found a chassis ground spot near the shifter.

I'm in that situation. Automatic and no smoker package.
Very busy with work, family, and the weather is very cold outside.

Right now it's getting constant power, and I do plan on finding a switched fuse.
But man it's so useful now with this cold we have.

Hello Nickco43,

I just got an '07 328i coupe with 222K miles, first BMW I've owned, car is in great shape and I'm loving it. Heated sport seats are great and thought I'd google to see if a heated steering wheel was an easy retrofit, found your thread.

I saw that you made a harness for gamesfrager. Would you be able to make one for me too? Plenty of nice heated wheels on eBay, have another 4 months of winter here in Boston, so probably a good job some Saturday soon.

Doing seat belt arms this weekend. Need to figure out how to remove the bright strip to re-anodize that.

Yup, it works just fine this way. I didn't bother finding another switched power source.

Agreed. One of the best mods I've made to my car.

A little update on the whole fuse thing.
Right now it turns off after a while, not sure how long. But thank god it does! I have forgotten it a couple of times turned on, and when I came back; it was off.

On my F48 (2018 X1) it turns off instantly when the car is off.

What fuse did you tap into?

I believe it's at #12 now, I still need to go at it again and try to find one that turns off when car off. It's going to be -18C° tomorrow.

@Shaun make sure you have a way to reset the DSC and angle sensor.
When I thought about this retrofit; I didn't think I would need it.
Since I was replacing the clockspring with a brand new one.

Did you use an add-a-fuse at the main fuse box or tap into a wire elsewhere?

I'm fairly certain the tap I did at the gear selector indicator wire also powers off after a while - just not sure how long. I believe it's on the same circuit as the start button's back lighting which also stays lit for a duration of time even after locking the car. Probably not a big deal if one forgets to turn the heated wheel off, I'm 99% sure it'll power down after like 5 minutes or however long the circuit stays powered for.

It's on an add-a-fuse on the main fuse box.
I'll have to time how long it stays on and will report back.

Mine cuts off after the ignition is turned off. I think you taped a fuse that is on the cars sleep cycle.

E9x should all have same steering wheel. But I'll let Nickco43 confirm.

Odd question, but figures this just a good a place. Found a heated paddle steering wheel that I want to retrofit...but, its warm enough year round here and I sont wanf more work than necessary. Is there a way to install a heated wheel just to retro the paddles or does it only work with the new clock sensor either way?

You need new clock spring that can supply power for the heater module in the steering wheel.
If you are buying the wheel just for the paddles; then no need for a new clock spring.

However you still need to wire the paddles.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
