Benchmade Proper FTMFW!

I thought I would share pix of my new exhaust. I bought it from a local guy in Maryland. He had had it made by a company in Elkridge called Benchmade Proper, www.benchmadeproper.com. It's a 3" downpipe back exhaust with vibrant cylinder resonators and vibrant oval resonators. It has quad tips that are amazing. Everything is 304 stainless and tig welded by the owners, Joe and Brian. I took the exhaust to them after a day of trying to hang it on jackstands with a torn rotator cuff. I just couldn't pull it off and I also wanted to develop a relationship with them as I may expected to have the exhaust modified to my specs should there be drone or poor fitment, etc. I went this morning and had the exhaust hung and the bumper cut. Benchmade Proper is really small shop and just starting out but they are starting for the right reasons. They don't cut corners or overpromise. The materials are quality and they're willing to accommodate all requests. Their workmanship speaks for itself. I'm really happy with how it turned out. Joe cut my stock bumper and it looks great. I expected to end up buying an Mtech if this didn't work out but I'm completely satisfied. Enough with the typing...

The exhaust gets obtrusive around 2300 rpm but only under load in 6th. It doesn't drone it more like booms. I'm considering adding sound canisters (similar to what's used on a G37) in the near future. Joe knew exactly what I was talking about when I talked with him. In fact, he was doing that exact same thing for an RSX later today.

I'm very pleased. The quality, fitment, and attention to detail that Benchmade delivers is awesome.

Glad you are enjoying Jeramies exhaust! It really is awesome!

p.s. the cutting of the stock rear bumper looks pretty good too!

Here is the virtual dyno comparison of a 3rd gear run before and after the exhaust install. The logs follow.

That's a pretty sizeable gain - 35 whp. Looking at the logs you'll see IAT differences of about 10-12 deg. That will negate some of the gains as cooler temps give more power but at close to the 100 deg mark I'm not sure it's that big of a deal. I'm not necessarily saying I gained 35 whp but the car feels quicker.

There is a big throttle closure with the new exhaust. This was literally on the drive home so there was no adaptation. I never felt it - as demonstrated by the dyno. My timing values are dead even.

Curious what something like that cost? PM is you like. Looking for a shop that would be willing to try and fabricate some downpipes for my diesel.

I bought it used so don't know what they'd charge. They did quote a full exhaust on a classic Galaxy at $7-800. I'm considering having them make my downpipes... Wait, shhhh. Step away from the downpipes. Step away from the downpipes....

Thanks. Sent them an e-mail to see if they would be up for the challenge of making downpipes for the d. They'd probably be the first in the US to do it.

glad it all worked out Jason, car looks great. Joe from Benchmade Proper is an awesome dude and he knows his stuff. This exhaust was not cheap to make but you get what you pay for . Benchmade Proper will be doing my exhaust on my next car that I pick up. Enjoy the new setup Jason, I loved it for the short time I had it.

Thanks Jeramie. My experience at benchmade was exactly what I was looking for. The exhaust may be more expensive than other ots stuff but it's one of a kind and will made to the owner's requests. I had them weld hangers on the main section and I'm confident adding the canisters would be no problem.

Just call them. They had the main section from an e60 m5 that the owner was selling. Looked sweet. They have lots of pix on their Facebook page.

If I go quad pipe, I'm cutting my rear bumper like you did, Jason. It looks clean.

Thanks. I'm so happy with how it turned out. I really have to give credit to the Benchmade guys. They knew what they were doing and it shows. One of the owners showed me pix of a 535i that they did a quad exhaust for and cut his bumper - realize that that is a single exit. Looked flawless. I was sold.

I brought a template made in powerpoint based on the stock opening. It was completely symmetrical. They sort of put it up there and eyeballed it and drew it with a sharpie. That's about it. In talking to them it is abundantly clear that they understand symmetry and anal retentive BMW owners. They're the same way. Anything less than perfect isn't going to work and that's from their standpoint. Sounds like I'm beating a dead horse here but I was literally nervous and anxious about the whole thing and by the time we were done I was relaxed and confident and just hanging out. Those guys get it.

Thanks Matt. I'm just sad that I didn't have it before the track day. I was so anxious about it that I couldn't relax and watch the drag racing. Nice traps BTW.
