well I'm out of warranty so don't care. If I set to Map 0, can the dealer read the codes like normal, or it needs to be fully taken out? I'm getting limp mode occasionally and think it's a sensor.

I just had to remove my jb4 since I'm getting my turbos replaced under warranty. I did clear the codes, but I didn't mess with my maps at all. Was I supposed to put it back to map 0 before I removed the jb4? I kept it at map 5, just cleared the codes, waited 10 minutes, then removed it. |

Easiest way would be to plug it into your computer and do it through the JB4 software.

I am considering purchasing a 2011 BMW that had a JB4 tune. They are taking everything off and returning to stock. Since I won't have JB4 anything, is there a way to check for codes or clear it without the JB4 tool or addon?

Yeah that's the best way..why risk it when unhooking ithe battery is so easy? I know some say they let the ecu sleep and one guy said he takes his on and off all time and doesn't even wait. I'm not playing ecu roulette to save an extra 2 min task.

I need quick help - my car had a couple "yellow overheat" warnings before and I suspected that it was due to the water-pump. So, I disabled my jb4 by doing 0/0 (Map 0) right before I got into the dealer. Then, their technician called and said they couldn't read any code because I had the "auto code clear" on all the time. So, they couldn't move forward without reading the code, and I am taking the car back now.
Here are my questions: 1) If i keep my jb4 disabled (0/0), would the "auto code clear" still function? Or I still have to turn it off (1/3)? 2) If I enable JB4 (0/5) and turn off "auto code clear" (1/3), when the warning comes on again, will the code be stored and I can take it back to the dealer? 3) Would the "yellow overheat warning" generate a code to be stored? If so, can I read it thru JB4 steering wheel method after it happens?? 4) If my dealer is cool about the JB4 as long as they can read the codes, can I leave it disabled or I still need to take it out? There is one on Amazon that costs about 70 bucks. It displays the codes, and tells what they mean. Easy to clear codes with it. Search "BMW code reader." A good tool.

Your tech knew what he was talking about when he said Uti clear was on, which means he may beok with the jb4. You need to turn off auto-clear, it is effective in all maps. Drive for a bit let it store new codes, since auto clear may have cleared them, which I doubt because mime stayed while I had my auto clear on. Anyhow, turn off auto clear, drive the car let it overheat and theb take it back, codes are stored for atleast a week or so in the DME. Personally I always take my jb4 out, every dealer is different. |

Thanks for the input. That is what I am going to do, and I actually disable it (0/0) instead. Actually, JB4 is simple enough for most people, but I still remember the pain i went thru with those sensor plugs and would like to avoid fiddling with the ECU wiring as much as possible. My local dealer seems to be pretty cool with it, maybe because the bill will be going to my extended warranty company. Therefore, I would not want take it off and put it back on if not 101% needed :-)

If you are not under warranty, just put the JB4 in pass through mode (map 0) and go to a 3rd party shop that services BMWs.
If you still want to remove the JB4, just reverse the directions - unplug the JB4 from the various sensors and plug the sensors back in to the stock harness. I never locked the doors and waited for the ECU to go sleep. However, it takes 10 mins to remove all the stuff to enable access to the sensors anyway.

Disconnect battery negative terminal. Begin unplugging all connector clips and plug the stock harness back into sensors. Canbus wires need to be heat gunned if you managed to put those glue wire covers back on. Once all connectors are plugged into each sensor correctly and nothing is loose, plug negative battery terminal back in and you are good to go. Just removed my jb4 the other day with ill effects doing it this way.

I just did the exact steps last night, and successfully removed my JB4. Unfortunately, i am not a handy man and it still took me about 2 hours to complete. However, i am so glad that I found the "USB" method to allow me to unplug those connectors
If anyone else is fighting with those connectors, basically stick an usb to keep the tab disengaged and pull them out - BINGO!! Quote:
