People think their parts/cars are worth their weight in gold

Has anyone else gone through the classifieds and wondered why the hell people are trying to sell their parts for damn near retail or even more? Come on now guys... I just saw an iCarly adaptor for $80 plus shipping. It's on sale for $59 now brand new. I'm seeing crazy stuff like OEM charge pipe $190, OEM shift knob $80, JB4 $450, DCI only 100k miles $80, Used OEM spark plugs less than 5k miles $60, OEM water pump with a cracked housing $150, 2007 335i with 100k miles $22k.... OEM window tint came off an '08 M3 $600...come on now. I know I'm exaggerating a bit but let's keep it real guys. There's a reason it's been sitting there for months with zero comments or responses and still for sale. I looked because I was curious and then saw a trend so I had to keep looking to see how many other people thought their stuff was worth almost retail. It's astonishing. Both of my whole damn 335i's might be worth $10k combined with all aftermarket parts. It's almost 2020 guys. Your 2008 parts/car that are brittle and falling apart isn't worth retail. Even if it was a 2009 in pristine condition with only 25k miles, it's not worth 23k. ITS A DECADE OLD!!! Lmfaooo I'm done. I have my flame suit on and I'm ready.

Over-valuation of used items doesn't just apply here, or to car parts in general. I have many hobbies and this is a very common occurrence in the used market.

same here.

Those high price make me search further.

- 100k km drive shaft used : 200$. Get it rebuilt for way less and new.
- A/C high pressure line : 100$. Get it patched from a aluminum welder : 20$.
- used angel eye bulb : 30$ each . Got brand new LED set for 40$.

I'm not surprised when ''you pull salvage yard'' got E90, they get ripped in few hours. those upull yard sell light for 2$, any drive shaft for 35$, complete engines for 200$, coil packs for 5$.

Used water pumps/thermostats make me laugh every time (especially N52/N54). Why buy a very common failure part new when you can buy a used common failure part with miles on it for 1/3 or 1/2 the price so it can fail even sooner.

Imagine doing that AND paying labour!

Dealer are the same.

Prices didn't change a bit since the E90 was new + their labour is crazy high.

At first I couldn't understand why they got high part price on old car, I was assuming no body would bring a 6000$ car to do 2300$ maintenance fix.

But a friend who work at a dealer bring me the answer in 2 parts :

1 - Most people are not car enthusiast, and don't understand anything around this. They all think because its OEM and the labour is BMW certified, that will be 1000X better than any jobber part and any indie mech.

I.e.; A lot people thinks that ANY used tire is worst than ANY new tire, no matter the brand. This is as far people don't use their brain.

2 - A used ''luxury'' car is too cool to scrap and get a new one. So people are way more into getting it fixed in comparison of a Pontiac G5 shitbox that will end in a scrap yard with 500$ needed fixes. So sellers have no reason to lower the prices.

Let me know when you're ready to part out your cars at pennies on the dollar... but, yes, people often ask too much for what they have. Some just don't know what they're worth and some are willing to let them sit until someone desperate enough comes along and pays their asking price. Most will eventually drop their prices to get them gone.

Need to up my salvage yard game, I'm tired overpaying for junk other people pulled from these yards. That said, there are still seem to be a lot of relatively well priced used parts for e90s. Mine is relatively low mile, 115k so don't need many parts, though

You forgot to mention guys that are selling their used floor mats for $120 or a trunk mat for $100.

~Nobody gives a damn that your rear mats are in pristine condition.

Now those troopers are something else.

It’s not the one who asks, it’s the one that pays. Luckily in some cases people won’t and the sellers realize their mistake. Sometimes they don’t and they’ll sit on their crap forever. No need to try to educate them as they aren’t willing to listen.

Exactly.

I see frequently roof racks bars for $250 USED when they can be had at $stealers for $190. A month ago a seller on offer up listed a M4 center console that included the pre LCI cup holder cover that I wanted. I inquired and the clown wanted $40 for it. New they are $28 but wound up paying $10 for it from someone else.

Can’t blame people for wanting to retire early I guess.

I saw someone trying to sell used E90 steering wheel buttons for nearly $160 and claimed it was a deal because new ones are $230 and they "don't see anyone else selling them." You can buy an entire used steering wheel, buttons and all, for $160.

I bought used ones on eBay for $20 and sold my broken ones for $10.

If you want the part, make an offer. If it doesn’t sell at an inflated price, he may be more receptive a little later. Funny, my pet peeve in the rambling, one huge paragraph because it’s nearly impossible to read.

funny to see this since Im parting out my entire car because it definitely is worth more in parts than it is as a whole. Its a decade old and had 100k miles on it. I have over 2k in mods (780whp single turbo) and maintenance in it and the way I have been pricing my parts is finding comparable prices online for used stuff and then undercutting them by 20 bucks lol. Need the garage space cleared before my f80 is here in a week.

I figure a lot of it is people starting high so they have room to come down with certain items.

It goes both ways too.....I try to be fair about anything I sell, but will get ridiculous offers that are a waste of time. I can understand bargaining, but sometimes people want something for nothing.

There are logical reasons...
Say you had a car you wanted to sell, but the water pump went out on it or was bad. Knowing you were selling the car, you may want to buy a used pump just to sell the car.

Or, maybe you track your car a lot, or are a mechanic looking to keep a car going on the cheap.

Not saying I would do it, but there are reasons for used water pumps.
No different than used turbos, or used suspension, or...
All used parts have a value, just is relative to how much you’re willing to pay.

Some people list to price haggle, some list to sell ASAP, some willing to sit on parts forever.
Everyone is different but generally yes, I’ve seen used parts car on FB and Craigslist for more than you could buy a running e9x

Do enlighten me on where i can get working engines for 200 bucks.. Used or unknown state engines here in norway start at around 25.000Nok = 2700usd For a 318D engine. Any engine from a 320 325 330 335 the prices skyrocket.
