Dash noise problem - Help!
I had a similar problem on my E92 - it was the plastic housing by the rear view mirror - at fist i thought it was behind my iDrive screen. It may not be the same problem but its worth a check.

Back in 1991 I had a Acura Legend Coupe that had a squeak/clunk in the back seat area. I removed the entire interior trying to find it. Turned out to be a defective rear shock/strut and was replaced by the dealer under warranty. The SA gave me the strangest look when I finally brought it in. "Uhh sir, why did you disassemble your interior?" he said. |

Any more characteristics noted?
Have you tried pushing firmly on the dash top, instrument binnacle, changing the steering wheel position etc? Is it more in hot or cold weather or when you have cold or hot air coming through the vents? etc. Is it there all the time?

I have an annoying sound coming from what I believe is behind the steering column. When I turn, I can hear something rolling. If I turn the other way it rolls back the other direction. Annoying as hell.
I noticed soon after taking the car in for service... I wonder if the service tech dropped something somewhere. I never put stuff on the dash, nor do I stick stuff in the vents. I have no idea how to find the noise.... |

Mine definitely sounds like some object rolling inside the dash. I can jerk the wheel back and forth and hear it roll around. It doesn't happen only while the wheel is being moved.

Most likely the instrument gauge cluster. My E90 had some serious squeak. Try holding down on the top part of the instrument gauge cluster and see if the noise stops. Undo the torx screw and tip the whole gauge cluster down and put some padding to dampen the noise. Good luck!

I had an annoying noise like that in my '07 e92 and it turned out that a ball bearing in my visor mirror fell off and would roll from side to side in the visor when turning. If my windows were down, it sounded like it was coming from the dash. With them closed, it sounded like it was something in the sunroof. Flip your visor down and hit it and see if there's any noise in there, it's worth a shot.

Hi all. I have a 2006 320D and I have this exact same rattle. Something plastic is rolling left to right when going round a corner (does not go back and forth). Very annoying now. Ruining the BM experience completely.
Anyone had any joy?? I have the glove box, cupholders, radio, climate controls, fan all out and it is still there (slightly louder too). Help needed!!! |

everyone with this rolling sound should go under the hood, remove the microfilter cowl (6 screws), take a peek inside the two ducts and see if there is a screw or something rolling around in there.

Tried that.... Nothing there. I think it is inside the air distribution system in the middle behind the ac controls. No idea how to get in there though!

If you mean a buzzing rattle over bumps, try gripping the cruise control stalk and see if that makes it stop. The dealer replaced my cruise control, and the 328i loaner they gave me while I waited had the same cruise control rattle. |

....oh,...and i put a small piece of rubber between the dash and the windshield and the noise was killed. The rubber is not visible but it helped.

If that's your culprit, some well-placed felt tape will do the job. Sounded a little like how you describe yours. Took me weeks of frustration to find that one. Hope that helps... Dave Last edited by granadablanca; 06-16-2010 at 10:01 PM.. |

Old thread but I also have the same left to right noise... if I swerve when driving I can hear something slide around. I thought it was screws stuck on the underpannel or something but no... anyone found solution.
