Solenoids or something more?
Hey guys,
Chasing a little bit of an odd one here. Basically, I hear this electrical buzzing when my car is on and it powers down when my car turns off. It has been slowly increasing in loudness and I'm trying to track it down and fix it. My first thoughts were the Boost Solenoids were going bad because I could press down on them while the car is on to get rid of some of the sound and when the car turns off the sound slows down and stops. I thought this might be the pressure from the boost? I'm in the middle of ordering new ones and have put a used spare set from a friend on my car to see if that helped. It did remove some of the loudness of the noise, but it's still there. I have attached a sound clip of the noise I'm talking about. https://voca.ro/o82HE9l5Fah If anyone has heard of something similar and can help me point out what it could be? Cheers |

Jin said to disconnect the boost solenoid hose while the car is running and see if the noise stops If it stops its the solenoid If not its something more serious I would take it into Eastern BM tbh, that noise doesnt sound good |

There are only 3 items on that side of the engine that spin i.e. water pump and turbos. To eliminate the water pump, I would do the bleeding procedure:-
1. Connect battery charger 2. Switch on ignition 3. Set heater to MAX temperature and turn fan to lowest speed 4. Press accelerator pedal for 10 sec to floor 5. Bleeding procedure begins and takes approximately 12 mins (Electric coolant pump turns ON and OFF automatically) If the coolant pump doesn't make that noise, I would think it is a turbo blade touching the housing on a turbo. |

Thanks Phil, Ill give that a shot - I did put a friends solenoids in which did reduce the noise about 50% - I'm planning to get some different solenoids to see if that helps/ eliminate that as the problem.

Small update to this - replaced with new solenoids and the sound has gone away. Although it does sound electrical, after speaking to a few BMW techs, it seems to be more the mechanism in the solenoid making the sound.
