Seat + Chassis Vibration

Hey guys,

This just started to happen recently, or I may have just started to notice it. When I'm cruising at about 75-80mph and give about 30% + throttle, I notice the car starts to vibrate. The more load, the more vibration throughout the car. The steering wheel does not shake, it's just the chassis and seats. It almost sounds like the tires are digging into something. The odd thing is that it's completely intermittent. I could give it some throttle and it'll vibrate, then about 10 minutes later, it'll be smooth as butter.

I have 19' VMR's that are not bent. Tires were just replaced about 7k miles ago. I just had my vehicle re-aligned and re-balanced and it still does it. The tire shop confirmed there is no out of round tire issue present.

I've read a lot of threads on things to look for, but wanted to see if anyone had any particular insight on the intermittent vibration. I don't ask for help often, but because of the fact that the vibration is intermittent, I'm not sure where to start after checking out the alignment and balance of the tires. Not sure if it matters, but I'm FBO, although it happens no matter what map I am in.

Any advice would be appreciated. As soon as I have time to get under my car, I'm going to check the wheel bearings and control arm/sway bar bushings. Is there anything else to be aware that may cause intermittent vibrations?

Thank you all.

I would also look at the drive shaft center support / carrier bearing. Also inspect u-joints but a bad drive shaft bearing could give you a vibration. Part # 7 in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=26_0233

I will also check that out. Now, if it were a bearing or bushing, wouldn't you think it would be more of a constant than an intermittent vibrate? I hate to get under the car, but also hate the vibration. I'm getting too old for this. Lol.

Yeah - may not be related but it is something else that could cause a vibration. Typically when the center support bearings really go there is some clunking or thumping under acceleration / applied torque in lower gears and you did not describe that exactly that. Good luck in finding the source!

I'm having the same issue, if you pop the car into neutral while you feel the thumping you'll probably hear a clunk. I'm thinking it's a half shaft or a cv joint even though I don't get much clicking on turning.

Well, not sure if I should say luckily, but I don't have any clunking or thumping. It only happens while I am moving and roughly at 75mph - 80mph and while accelerating. Will put it up this weekend to look.

Was your vibration intermittent also and felt rough on accel, but then sometimes totally fine? It certainly doesn't feel like it's tune related, it's definitely something mechanical.

Update:

Just scanned my car and it looks like I've tripped the low pressure fuel sensor. Going to replace it soon and will update with what happens. Silly that I didn't think to scan the car first.
