My A/C belt is shredded. Anyone have this issue after their pulley replacement?

No. Did you put a new belt with the new pulley?

Yup. To be honest I heard a squeal on start up a couple of weeks ago. Checked under the hood and saw lines on the top of the ac belt. I had to travel for work the next day so didn't follow up. Fast Forward to yesterday and the belt is in shreds.

I'm going to check the torque on the pulley and look around. AC was working fine right up until the belt gave way. I hope the compressor didn't crap on me all of the sudden.

Not sure why I'd see ridges cut in to the top of the belt either...

Anybody know if the n54 dampener is the same as the n57? My n57 just started showing symptoms of failure while I'm near DC in NoVa. Anybody local up this way have a spare n57 dampener to sell?

As a quick update, ECS has the Febi and Vaico pulleys in stock. Gonna throw a Febi on there this week with new belts. Anybody had any fitment or longevity issues with this cheapo? Wish the pending new one were already available....

Sorry for the delayed response.... Fitment is exactly the same as stock...as for longevity, I dont think anyone has had them long enough to be able to say.....

Cuda, you can add me to the list. I'm in South Carolina with 115,500 miles, and the A/C is always on. I had no symptoms. Drove 20 miles, parked car, got in 30 minutes later and cranked it. Went to back out of my parking space and had no power steering, then noticed a burnt rubber smell. Popped the hood and could see that power steering pulley was turning, but much slower than normal. Because of this thread, I knew what was happening.

Drove on to my next stop about five miles from home with intermittent power steering. Parked for about an hour then left to go home. Power steering was mostly gone, but with a couple of instances of assist. As I drove gingerly, I got the charging system failure light a few times, and then an overheating warning. About a mile from home, I got a message to stop driving because the engine was too hot. At that time, I was coasting downhill and the red stop driving message reverted back to the orange overheating message. Since the next half mile was all downhill, I continued coasting. Overheating warnings went away and charging system warnings returned. Once in the neighborhood, I had to climb a couple of small hills so the heating warnings came and went again, but I manhandled the steering wheel to get into my driveway.

Popped the hood to take another look. All seemed normal except the long serpentine belt was broken clean--not shredded. In fact, it looked clean and new, part numbers and everything, except for the break. Would the intermittent stopping and starting from the harmonic pulley have caused this?

I cranked it again after removing the broken belt just to take a look at it running. With my flashlight, I noticed a little runout and rubber dust in front of the pulley.

Ordering new parts now...

I second that. I can't imagine having engine on without water pump turning too.

Got my new Vaico pulley/balancer and four new bolts installed, along with two new belts. All is right in the universe again. If anyone wants my OEM pulley, speak up before I toss it.

Glad you are back up and running.

Could you share part numbers for the items you purchased?

Has anyone identified a reason for these failures? Climate, manufacturing date etc?

I have one M57 with 174k miles and another 155k miles and neither damper show any cracks or abnormal wear.

I'll add mine to the list... sudden with no signs. Happened right after a regeneration occurred so engine bay temps were up for sure. I ordered the Vaico replacement on parts geek for $200. It is the updated version with vent holes. I live in AZ so ac is constantly on. Turned on car after dropping kid off at school and no power steering and charge malfunction light
. Turned off ac and ps returned to normal. Drove it 3 miles home and looked while car was running. The belts and accessory pulling barely and intermittently turn.
