Job complexity and service time for changing out springs?
Hey guys,
Just wondering what the BMW factory service manual quotes for swapping out four springs on an e92 coupe with sport springs? For a mechanically inclined person, is it possible to tackle personally? Thanks in advance. -dan

Hell no.. I had a H&R cup kit suspension put in last year and it did not look easy. No way in hell would I be able to do it myself, even if I owned a lift and all the tools.

wow its not hard at all. all you have to do int he rear is three bolts and carefully lower the control arm.
in the front u just compress the spring lower it out of the strut tower outside the fender and take the top mount off. it takes about 30min a side in the front and 2-3hr.s for the rear if your doing the shocks too

Thanks for the quick feedback. I got a quote of $1550 retail from the dealer. They said they'd do it for closer to $1K. I was expecting something like $400 for labor plus a few ancillary parts here and there.

That is out of control for a spring install. Unless there is something super over complex about the BMW suspension, I'd say it should take an experienced mechanic no more than 5 hours to complete. Even at $100/hr, that's only $500 total. $1000 is insane.

Too bad indeed. I'd love to get it done at a dealer but I'm going to have to find a place that's a bit more reasonable than that. Surprising too, this dealer has been great with just about every other request I've had.
Thanks for all the input guys.

Dude PM Alex on here he can do with for you for a fraction of that price. Also Boss audio in Perth Amboy, NJ can do it for you for around $200 or less.

I had my BMW perf suspension installed along with a rear sway, M3 suspension bits (control arms etc.) and the rear subframe mounts, with alignment, at my dealer for under 1k. It was a fantastic job, they did everything by the book, adjusted headlights etc. etc., no squeaks rattles or any problems at all.
First time I let a dealer do anything like this, as I always liked to DIY. But given the BMW parts and the great price, I am very glad I let them do it. Just springs, that I would have to do myself, especially for >$400. But rear subframe mounts? And the rear sway? $ well spent for me. Unfortunately my time is worth something, so paying others to do stuff right the first time is appealing. For the young folks, working on your car is such a great learning experience that I would say go for it, ideally with someone that can show you the ropes.

That's good advice. Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat as you, and I can't spend 2 days learning how to swap springs as much as I'd like to.
Looks like I got a crap quote from the dealer. I'll let my SA know.
