Wow, that's scary. Make sure you have a hitch along with a bicycle just in case your car leaves your stranded.

Maybe we should have home location information as well, to see if the failures correlate to higher AC usage areas?

Persian,
How do you know? Have you put a camera down there to inspect or something? Is it cracked? If it is......I wouldnt wait....at the very least Id have one in the trunk.

UPDATE: Nevermind, I saw your post in the other thread.... Im no expert but "play" doesnt seem too logical to me. I just dont want to give readers of this thread the idea that you can inspect it and feel for play. That said, if a visual inspection shows what Hockey had....actual tears in the rubber......THAT will fail soon and is easily diagnosed.

But no matter, you probably did the right thing anyway...it will need done regardless....

That is right -- I had it swapped out as a precaution and once it was out the mechanic noticed play.

See thats what I dont understand...I dont know how they could notice play...its HARD rubber...its either still attached to the hub or it isnt...and the amount of torque the engine puts on that thing, I cant imagine much flexing being done by hand....and if you COULD move it around by hand then either there should be cracks...OR....the engine would have already torn through it...

Just feels like the mechanic told you what you wanted to hear....it was a good move to change it..... (which it was)

But hey....I could be wrong....just my 2 cents.

I've been logging the full blown failures as well as failure imminent ones (hockey's being a great example). Point being that I was after a pattern of failure and not when it's a good time to change. This is Omaha's thread so I'm leaving Persian's entry in the list. Persian, thanks for the note so that I know to not use in the average computation. It's time for me to compute again.

Went to bed last night thinking I just needed to buy a new AC stretch belt and get it installed but now after reading this I guess I'll be replacing the HB too. Day ruined! My wife needs the car in 2 weeks she is taking it on a big trip until then we can make do sharing my truck. How long does it take to get all the parts once they are ordered? Also could somebody possibly make a list of the parts needed, maybe with links? And a step by step guide. I would greatly appreciate it as will the next poor guy who has to replace his HB.

Copster3811 pics would be a wonderful addition. Hoping this won't take me too long, I am in the middle of a 26 day stretch with no off days so all the work will have to be done before going to work each day.

Inspect your HB for the following damage: this is a single page post from this same thread but this way you don't have to hunt for it. This is from DreID's car. Hockey13 barely caught his with a crack like this before having the problem strand him on the road.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=137

You should see some sort of a 45° angle crack or at least a crack at some sort of an angle. This thread has spots where people explain how to do it. It isn't a concise DIY. These threads often run the gamut of discovery, find the parts, and then how do you install it. Unfortunately, you have to wade through the posts to find the "fruit" you need.

People are buying either OEM part or some aftermarket sources. Some have found there part looks just like the BMW part but suspiciously the aftermarket has a ground of spot right where the BMW logo would have been. We speculate that it is exactly the same part but manufacturer has to grind of BMW logo to be able to sell under there own name. Corteco 80001003 is one example that I know of. here is a link to an example.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corteco-800.../dp/B0068MV2ME

I have not had this failure yet as I have 48,9xx miles. It has been recommended to replace the 4 screws that hold the damper to the front of the crankshaft. Of course you should replace both belts. There is a Lisle belt removal/install tool covered in this thread too. You will need to learn how to search for words within a specific thread.
Here is a link to realoem.com which shows the individual parts related to the harmonic damper. Item 2 is the screws you need.

For what its worth.... heres my personal opinion on this job... others will disagree....

1. You can do this yourself....its not that hard.... and frankly you dont need instruction...the only 2 hints I will give you about removal is.... have someone there to help you pull out the radiator fan... and... twist that air hose out of the way and you are good.

2. I didnt change the belts....or the 4 bolts.....changing those is not required as they are not damaged by this failure... changing them would be purely preventative and maybe needed......maybe not.

3. Definitely get the stretch belt remover......I know they have them for rent/borrow from Orilley auto....I was dumb and thought i could do it without.... took me an extra hour.

4. Definitely go get the etorx sockets from harbor freight...I used a couple crappy 6 pt sockets instead...not a great idea.

5. Read the other thread about the 2 ways to lock the flywheel so the balancer doesnt turn while you are cranking on it. Either method will work fine...

My biggest concerns are taking the heat exchanger and the fans off. Fans seem pretty straight forward but there is a lot of clips and things surrounding it that I don't want to break so what's the plan of attack for that? As far as the heat exchanger goes is it something you can only get to from the bottom? What exactly is involved in taking it off? Planning on getting the HB and both belts ordered then get everything taken out and bad HB removed so it's all ready to be put back together when the parts come in.

I got the Febi aftermarket damper looked solid enough it's only been on the car 1K miles so a bit early to tell. Cost with belts approx $300.

2 questions...first, which etorx sockets are you referencing? Just looked on harbor freight and there 27 options under that search, I have a large tool set with what appears to be most of the parts under that search. Anybody have a picture or link for clarification? Secondly, which other thread are you talking about?

You need a set of Etorx sockets anyway if you're going to maintain this car. My set goes from E24 down to E4. It is made by gearwrench and I bought it online from tooltopia. Largest one I've use so far is E14 on the center strut brace bolt. Strut brace had to come off for intake removal.

This is sounding like a good 100K mile PM. I'm at 82K miles still running the original belts and coolant. 100K would be a good time for the HB, belts and coolant change. I keep asking the dealer about the coolant and the they keep saying they tested it and it's fine. I've never had to add any.
