Weird noise coming from front left footrest area [Video Uploaded!]
I get this problem once in a while, then its gone for a few days until it starts happening again.
At low speed traveling, more noticeable on rough roads I hear and feel that something is hitting in the front driver side area under the footrest. As the car moves, I can feel it under my feet.. the noise is like tak tak tak tak.. It could be related to the shocks although they perform like before with no issues, maybe the tower is not sitting tight or something.. I cant be sure. What else is in that area that might be causing the noise? Any guesses? Any help would be greatly appreciated! p.s I have aftermarket shocks and springs. BMW obviously blames the issue on those, but could it be anything else?? EDIT: I have uploaded a video, please see below post Last edited by tolkino; 04-02-2010 at 01:15 AM.. |

I have the exact same issue. I tried replacing the swaybar endlinks. That didn't help. I then installed HP Autowerks endlinks to get the proper length from lowering the car That didn't help. My next step is to check the tightness of the top nut one the strut. If that doesn't work I guess I'll be pulling the coilover back out for inspection. Running PSS9's. Good luck.

Man it sucks.. I also thought it could be the sway bar endlinks but its definitely not the issue, its not the ball joint either. The top nuts looked tight when I checked, I will also be removing the shocks to see the condition of it.. Weird because driving dynamics is not affected.
Is the noise always present for you? or does it come and go? Please report back anything. Good luck! |

I'll be looking at that shortly.. mine comes and goes. the strange part is that after i drive about 10 miles on the highway and then slow down for stop and go traffic everyday, the clunking gets really bad, almost like something becomes unsettled from the high speed traveling (could the higher rotational inertia actually allow a slight amount of decompression of the spring and allow the collar to loosen a bit??). The clunking will very slowly get better from that point until i get home. the next morning the clunking is virtually gone again until the following day when i get back to stop and go traffic. what's yours like? what coilovers are you running?

I'm running Bilstein Sports + Eibach Pro kit. The issue i'm having is not quite the same as the one in the other thread, because when I shake the tires there is zero movement and I do not hear a sound. But it could still be related to loose collar.
I don't get the problem everyday, but when it starts to happen, it continues for a few days, then later it acts normal. From my experience, it is probably not related to high speed traveling but maybe it could be caused by constantly traveling on rough surfaces. I will try to see if find a problem with wheels off, if not I will remove the shocks for inspection. |

It seems like what I'm having is a different problem than the one in the other thread. I'm wondering if there are anybody else with Bilstein's or H&R coilovers that are having a similar problem? Trying to see whether this is the characteristic of Bilstein shocks, or just an unexpected issue.

I've had the same problem as you guys with my KW V1s for a few thousand miles now. I've checked just about everything. I'll be pulling the struts out this weekend.

I took a video of the wheel area while I push the car up and down, I noticed that the inner rod which is supposed to go up and down is actually hitting to the side of the metal that is covering it. I will try to upload that video.

go to your car and look under the gas pedal area...on the left side, right above the dead pedal, you'll see that the plastic piece on top. I put cushion tape all over it..see pic
I dont think this is what your problem is but give it a try is that the exact sound you hear when driving?
