Geared LSDs are the perfect in-between solution for fast street driving / canyon carving. On the track, it would be better to get clutch types as mentioned earlier for true lock (like a go-kart's solid rear axle).

Get it if you have the funds. It's always just about money. Nothing else really matters.

It is true that a properly set up car can take away much of the need for an LSD. I have tried different spring rates and dampening, proper sway bars (M sport)and ended up with an incredibly well balanced car. I think one would notice an LSD more on the street than on the track...think of right hand corners from a stop (in the US). It's nearly impossible to accelerate hard in 1st or 2nd without the inside wheel spinning. It would really benefit spirited driving on the roads.

He was just trying to get me to see the whole picture for performance and handling he believed I was just locked in on getting an LSD and that there are many other factors to a good handling car.

How much help is an LSD at getting a 335 moving uphill on ice or snow?

It helps. But winter tires are obviously key. The combination makes for a fun and effective snow car, although ground clearance constrains any serious romping in the deep stuff.

Back on topic, LSD is a critical component for the 335. If you have the $, my recommendation is to install springs/dampers (e.g., AST 4100), M3 control arms/bushings, sway bars, & LSD at the same time.

I've driven lots of both open and LSD equipped vehicles and currently have a GM V8 rear wheel drive 6sp w/LSD as my daily commuter. My 335 E90 will soon have its own LSD ( group buy Wavetrac ). In fact they are living both together in the garage right now until I find an installer.

One thing not mentioned here in this thread is the fun factor. The LSD allows controlled power slides on wet or dry and on solid or loose surfaces. It's a real hoot for me and it's something I've been doing since my first solid axle go-cart back when I was like 12 or 13 years old!!! Yeah, that's right, I've been drifting since before drifting was ~cool~.

On rainy days, when driving my LSD equipped GM beater commuter, I'm constantly looking around for nice safe spots to slide around a corner or get sideways on a straight road ( yes it is possible ). It totally freaks people out, but I am in complete control. The reaction of the car is predictable in a way that cannot really be described until you go out and use your right foot to move the rear of the car around ( with LSD ). Something that can't be done well with an open diff unless there's ample amounts of snow and/or ice.

Up to now, the only way I was able to slide my 335 was to force it with too much speed and too much throttle. Even then, there was always the harsh SNAP back when the outside tire regained traction ( you can't control this without and LSD ). When the LSD goes in, the harsh SNAP will be avoidable and entry into the slide will be very smooth and at way slower speeds with less power required.
