New turbos

Got my 335i back today after having the turbos & the sump gasket replaced, what a difference a new pair of turbos have made. The old 35i was always a quick car especially with the engine & gearbox remapps but now it feels so much quicker, lag is almost unnoticeable now & no more rattling waste gates.
The new VRSF charge pipe seems to have given the car a more raspy sound & seemed to give a bit of a performance gain during the few days I was running it with the old turbos.

The Mrs is a bit miffed that I've spent 3k on the car this month as the water pump also had to be replaced a week ago but I did notice a little smile on her face during our little drive this evening.

Am rather looking forward to having a proper drive of it this weekend & am going to take a trip to the pod & see if I can now get that sub 13 second quarter mile

Thanks Raj, am undecided we still need something more practicle for taking the dog out in but what to buy without spending 20k+ & if I were to buy an older x5 I may just end up with something that I would need to spend another few grand upon, so I guess I'll just enjoy the 35i for a little longer.

We'll I have had a good drive of the 35i this weekend & what a difference the new turbos have made, firstly it's so much quieter & its now brutally fast
I guess you don't notice the gradual decrease in performance as the old turbos wear.
Although 110,000 miles is good for a pair turbos on a n54 it's still big money for 'wear & tear' maintaince items. If manufacturers want to go down the road of turbo engines & can't provide turbos that will last the life of the car they should at least install them somewhere they can be easily changed.

No, far too much work for me, the garage that looks after the company I work for vehicles did it, along with replacing the water pump, fitting the VRSF chargepipe, new sump gasket & a oil & filter change. I bought the oil, filter & charge pipe all in its cost me just under £3,000.
Am very happy with it, I reckon it will easily do a sub 13 sec 1/4 mile now

The rattling is coming from lateral movement from actuator arm & the penny flap inside the inlet. They still performed well most of the time but eml was happening more often under hard acceleration & the rattling had become rather loud, although I hadn't realised how bad until driving it with new turbos.
If anyone needs to replace their turbos out of warranty then just buy them direct from Mitsubishi

Yeah that's what I thought but you had good pictures so I wasn't sure.

It took about 2 days to have my aftermarket turbos fitted. Front subframe off the car. It then took another day to redo the outlet hose from the rear turbo which was pinning the steering column so the steering wouldn't return to centre without physically doing it.

I'm pretty sure my rattles were gone for about 12 months but I think over time with the heating and cooling some rattle comes back. I don't have rattle on deceleration, only when the turbos have the wastegates about 80% open. I notice it at about 15% throttle. Annoyingly on such a powerful car that's most often town driving. Although I must say it seems better than it was. There's always something I suppose.

Hopefully I'll get back down the Santa Pod track some time. That new surface looks a bit tricky though. There have been a few crashes at the end of the track. Probably just a coincidence.

TBH 110k is pretty phenomenal or the tubs so more just a shame it happened before you now looking to sell.

Good news on the extra power you've regained now though.

As the car is so good to drive I am now keeping it and will just put up with the inconvenience of putting the dog in the back. I have also decided to do a CIC with combox upgrade.

No worries Mike
The engine can stay in, it needs to be supported via a engine lift and the subframe removed, hence getting the turbos replaced at the same time as replacing the leaky sump gasket as the subframe has to be dropped to change the sump gasket expensive but it kinda made sense

Good man.

And the CIC is an excellent upgrade and worth every penny.

Regarding the dog, have you thought about buying a small runaround to just use as a sort of daily with room to put the dog in the back? I’ve got a Fabia VRS which I picked up for not a lot and you drop the back seats to keep it a mini van and still good economically and for doing the chores.
