Help! Steering Shake Under Braking

Evening All!

Got an issue that’s doing my head in and I can’t seem to figure out what else I can potentially check or replace to what I have already carried out.

Vehicle is a pre lci E90 330D.

Without getting into Essays I have pretty much changed every suspension component I can such all the arms, springs, shocks, mounts and also have replaced all the brakes and pads and have replaced both calipers too. Even replaced the calipers and brakes again after less than 1000 miles under warranty and Brembo report come back advising nothing was wrong with the brakes and my mate said the calipers were fine but we blagged another set from the shop. All new bolts and lock nuts replaced with genuine BMW ones.

Symptoms are steering wheel shake and wobble around 45mph+ when braking. Feels like it’s coming from the right hand side and can hear a slight humming noise but had the wheels looked at and 2 mechanics don’t think it’s the bearings based on whatever tests or fault findings they have carried out. Can be quite scary as anything over 70-80mph I get worried the wheel is gonna come off or the cars gonna collapse on one side (paranoia maybe!)Trying not to get into the money pit situation but spent a fortune already so any potential help with anyone who has experienced something similar would be much appreciated. Somebody said it could be steering rack bushes.

Not something I have come across before though so would bushes be replaceable as I’m hoping it’s not the steering rack. If I’ve missed anything out I apologise but this has been going on for a few months now and really doing my head in. I’ve even changed tyres and also wheels to try and eliminate the issue but no luck!

Thank you!

I've got the same model but automatic. I feel this slight wobbly shake also but I'm still a fairly new owner to the car so can't be sure. My rears are also due for a change so I can't be certain its the same thing just yet. Hope you get it sorted pal or find the issue atleast.

Thanks buddy! It’s annoying the Shizzle out of me as I can’t figure it out! Come across a thread about bushes in the steering rack but need to research it further to see if it’s a easy fix or not!

keep us posted,,i have a slight wobble,,but ive had nothing changed since ive owned the car over a year ago,,passed mot no advisories,,i have got new control arms and rdius arms and drop links ready to go on when needed,,as i bought in error,,only needed nut tightened on control arm..when it was pry barred it had loads of play,,so bpught new everything,,then when i went to get fitted the guy i use tightened the nut and was fine,,honest guy i suppose ..but would need the new parts for future anyhow as keeping the car a while..only other thing that could be wrong is the hub itself,,ive read a few bits and pieces about it getting out of line, needs measured with some sort of roll out tool or whatever..

i had a bad shake under braking on my LCI 320d msport manual..changed discs, pads, both front control arms on either side, drop links, and it was still there..it first happened when the car had done 80k miles...

Started to drive me mad! But i researched it further and ended up changing the inner and outer tie rods ..Numbers 4 + 5 on the picture attachment
(the bits that steer connected to the hub and also the ones coming from the steering rack..they are replaceable without changing the rack)

The shake totally disappeared after this and has been fine for 40k miles or so.

I think these cars are very susceptible to any wear and tear in steering/suspension components..good luck and hope this helps your diagnosis!

I have also recently again devolved juddering under braking. The last time I stripped the front brakes down, replaced the calliper pins, cleaned & torqued everything back up & all has been good but now it's back.

So I took it into my local STS centre (have been taking all my cars there ever since I passed my test 29 years ago) firstly they carried out a free brake test where they put the car on rollers & measure the brake pressures/balance, which proved the brakes to be excellent, albeit a very minor fluctuation on the drivers front.
Next it went onto a cool ramp which shakes the car about as a chap underneath the car looks for movement in the steering & suspension components, which showed there to be slight movement in the drivers side front lower control arm & upon closer inspection showed that the rubber was beginning to split.
Looks like a pair of control arms & a geo next Saturday

Mine was pad deposit or some kind of foreign substance on either the pad or disc. After a few thousand miles, it disappeared.

When the front discs / pads were replaced, i bought a set of caliper pins and seals kit if needed, but everything was all good.

The shocks / tie rods and ends / top mounts / control arms were all new 30k miles ago.

A partially seized rear caliper also caused some vibration in the cabin on the motorway.

Hi Buddy,

Thank you for your views and the diagram. I have changed every component linked to the suspension including the arms you have mentioned. Had them all stripped back down and managed to get the two larger arms (the squiggly ones) and the others were found to be fine. Got it booked in with a BMW specialist on Saturday so shall update on what they might find. Appreciate the response though!

Could well be an issue around the 80k mark, mine has just ticked over 83k and has started to shake under hard braking. I'll have a look into it.
