Bang for your buck W/M or Intercooler

I only got a grand to spend, witch would be better for a daily driver.

Thanks sleeper, is that what you would do if $$$ was a factor? Already got BPC tune so I'm running 320HP.

I would go methanol as well. The IC wasn't too noticeable of an upgrade.

If you can swing it, I would PM Ianknown about where he got his IC as I heard the one he has replaces the factory pressure hoses. Using a Forge IC pipe and Wagner IC, I still get boost leaks and seals broken. I think this year I will replace that IC for something else, or just permanently seal up the factory connections.

I'm just gonna comment here, I've yet to see any data about ic upgrades here for 335d. No data to answer if the stock is inadequate, ot that the upgraded ones make any long term difference on these cars.

A lot of times an ic upgrade has a placebo effect on users because their old ic was full,of oil and not as effective. When they add a new clean ic it works better at first until it fills with oil.

Ics are not really a performance upgrade more of keeping your performance potential.

The way to know if your ic is too smal is to log it. If you do a long highway pull and you see you iats rapidly climbing then it's too small. If you iats basically level off its fine.

If you want more power add meth.

On gasoline cars, ics can make a difference if your car pulls timing to prevent knock which reduces power. Also having lots of oil in the intake lowers octane and increases knock reducing power.

do the meth, however watch the egts as adding fuel increases exhaust temps. These cars are fuel and turbo limited.

These cars (opposed to the 335i) don't push a lot of CFM. IC upgrade would be near the end of the list.

Thanks, I took a look at your thread again! http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=807046 I too had the same initial experience when I upgraded my IC, improve throttle response and power.

One thing that wasn't included in most of the dyno tests of a stock/upgraded IC, is how a cleaned stock IC vs an upgraded IC perfoms. Oil that coats the interior of the IC from the CCV/PCV and turbo seals dramatically reduces the efficiency of the intercooler and allows IAT's to rise. Higher IATs and oil from the intake making its way into the combustion chamber alters the centane of the fuel and lowers power output of an engine. This oil build up is a bigger factor than many people realize. So often times, folks replace an oil soaked IC with a clean (bigger) IC and say wow, look at the results, but try it again a year later when the new one is full of oil too, and you'll measure a power drop.

While I wouldn't argue that ICs can be a performance limiter on some cars, it just doesn't appear to be a huge bottleneck on the d from the very limited data I've seen. I think the data suggests pending money on W/M would give you more performance for the $$$ spent than an IC upgrade on this car. This is just my opinion, others can disagree! But I don't like the problems that come with W/M, and the reduction in ease of making it a daily driver, and I would upgrade my IC before going W/M

Not to say I would claim ics make 0 difference (sometimes they can make a car worse if their too big), but typically on most stock/modified cars ICs are very minor for typical street conditions. I went through 4 intercoolers installs on my last car and did extensive logging of iat, boost, maf, timing, knock, etc, looking for that last 1% of performance. Assuming an IC is right sized that is does not cause a significant pressure drop, and IATs that do not exceed 40F above ambient under moving conditions; then upgrading it to a bigger IC won't make much if any positive difference. I realize my gasoline experience is not directly applicable to a diesel. From APR on gasoline engines and oil in the intake affecting performance http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=727

W/M is 30whp. Cool way to add power, literally.

Lately I've been impressed with the helix IC. No heat soak at whatever temp, consistently does the same pulls over and over.

Don't quote me but I think BPC stated 20hp gains from the IC upgrade. Sure the oem takes a beating and slapping on a new ic does wonders in comparison, I agree with that.

A W/M system does require maintenance, not many people point this out. In the future our pumps will go out and they are not cheap; same thing on these progressive controllers, more parts more problems.

Depends what your goals are. Mine are around 400whp and without meth this may not be possible.

Thecastle Good question but couldn't replicate what you state. The OEM IC will heat soak on 3 runs faster than a gas grill.
