Unhappy reduced engine power

So finally at 133k miles I am running into my first problem with the D. As I am driving to work today the reduced engine power light came on and the car could barely move. I know from reading these forums others have experienced this as well. Generally speaking what is the usual cause? I am going to have it checked out tomorrow or today if I have time. Can it be a loose hose? Egr clog? Egr cooler cracked? turbo actuator? carbon?

Could be anything! To diagnose, you need to get the fault codes from DDE.
I had before one instance of Limp mode. After restart, all was OK. I went to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong with the car at the time, no codes stored in DDE.

EGR related. Most likely CBU.

Quite possibly and yes they could. Hopefully you're still under warranty.

EGR probs... that sucks.

Get the CBU done and if you can get the deletes in place. I had CBU issues at about 18k miles, intake manifold had to be replaced.

Likely means there is limited air flow in your intake because it is clogged up with carbon, causing some plausibility error with the EGR system. Or the EGR valve is gunked up. Or both.

The CBU cleaning has been done by many on here as a DIY, lots of independent shops offer the walnut shell blasting CBU cleaning and the dealer prices have come down in many areas.

Good luck.

sadly no warranty, car has 133,000 miles and I don't think has ever had the carbon clean up yet. does anyone have a diagram of where the egr is? also how would I check to see if my egr cooler is cracked?

CBU cleaning is about $1k, you can also check out BavAuto and buy the tools to do it yourself.

Several threads on this in last ~ 4years. You typically see black dust around the EGR cooler and more so along the "S" curved plumbing downstream of the cooler. Keep in mind the cooler is an air to water interchanger so in theory, there can be exhaust leak or water leak. In practice, we have only seen exhaust gas leaks other than one guy (don't remember if it was here or bimmerfest/diesel) that had hydrolock and messed up his engine. Hydrolock is when engine coolant gets into combustion chamber and your engine attempts to compress the water and conn rods, etc get bent. I wouldn't worry with the water side but in theory that failure mode is plausible.

Egr clean up ( and throttle valve/body) is pretty simple. You can do it yourself. As for the carbon clean up, better off finding a good Indy shop.

That's not really bad at all. Have you seen pics of really bad ones? I'll bet the OP's looks more like a chunk of bituminous coal with a couple of pinholes in it.

I agree. Mine wasn't too bad compared to some I have seen.

Wow! What a difference after the egr block!!!!!!!! Correction on my pics, the pics were taken at 18k miles.

kydiesel, did you remove the egr just to inspect the effectiveness of the egr block? Thanks for posting that pic.

It's out now because of AAR race pipe mod; I was very surprised how clean it was.

EGR is main cause of CBU... Just run good fuel and change filters every or every other oil change.

Fuel Filters? I change mine every 2yrs or so, which turns out to be about every 10k miles for me.
