N52: “Marble noise” what is it.+sound recording

Get sort of metallic marble noise when accelerating. Noise comes from the engine. No particular codes. Not sure where to start investigating from top or from the bottom?

Listen to the sound recording below. It is most pronounced after 10th second.

What do you think?

Check the BMW recall site. It may be broken faulty Vanos bolts. If it is, park it.

Back when E30 were everywhere and swapping a M/S5x was the common if the it sounded like marbles rattling in the engine it was time for a Biesen Seal kit for the single Vanos.

Mike's suggestion is spot on and if possible scope it to see if they are.

Thanks guys. Mine is 2006 330i, and the vanos bolt recall does not apply to my car.

Any idea if these earlier motors also have the weak aluminum bolts that are getting replaced in 2010-2013 cars?

Opened up the valve cover, but not seeing any loose bolts. Any other ideas?

Noticed the plastic chain guide has some play, but seems like it is by design.
