safe to install spare tire on xi??

hi guys,

I just got a flat in my rear tire. I have an aftermarket staggered setup. 245/30/20 in front and 285/25/20 in the rear.

Would it be safe to swap the rear wheel with my original sports package wheels? I don't remember what the specs are but its the 18".

I don't want to damage anything but just need to get the car home (15mi away).

as long as the both tires are the same overall height, yes its safe.

i mean the 20" that i'm swapping out is a bigger rim though the tire is thinner, i suspect it will still be a tad larger in overall diameter than the 18"

...i'm at work and rather not have to change all 4 wheels back to stock ones in the rain...thats why I posed the question about changing just 1 wheel

great question. I wish I could help. I also have an xi and need some spare options in case something like this happens. I believe the 5 series spare is a good option, but I would love to see like a chart or something to see what our best bet is for staggered 19 inch and 20 inch, front and rear

when i messed up my tire size (installing new tires on XI), the DTM light on the dash lit up within a mile of driving and the car started behaving like it was losing traction. if you do decide to try it, just pull over if the light comes on. also let us know what your results are if you tried it. i drove for about 5 miles before figuring out something was wrong. it only really started acting up for me over 45mph.

I thought you need to make sure the overall diameter of the wheel is the same? In other words, as long as the spare has the same rolling diameter, you should be ok? (ie a compact spare will not work)

I had to do this last year and drive 15km home. I fully turned off DSC/DTC and took corners slower than usual, car was fine and didn't throw any errors or warnings.

Place the specs of each setup in this calculator. If the diameters match +/_ one tenth, then you are good to go.

I think you can run on it for a short while without a problem, but I usually just get her towed.
