Upgrading my fuel system, Limp mode. Help
Hello guys
I have a high speed limp mode problem (the notorious 428b code at 2.51 bar high speeds) have tried 3 maps and changed everything from MAP sensor, vac lines, MAF, tested vacuumpump, tested wgs, all pressure converters new etc etc but can't stort it out, I think it is fuel related. (running stage 2 , Dpf off, egr off ~370hk/700nm) Im about to fit a R90 pump (R70 std) and new injectors , do i need a bigger "high pressure fuel sensor" on the fuelrail? if so, is the Pre-lci fuel pressor sensor bolt on and the one to go with? And is there any upgrade bolt on MAP-sensor available to this engine? ( 535D 2009 LCI Euro), sry for posting in 3 serie forum but i didnt find any M57 section on 5 serie forum. and last, is there any upgraded injectors available for this engine or how much power is the stock bosch piezo capable of? My main problem is limp mode (code 00428b) at high speeds, around 200km/h otherwise the car is running perfectly. |

Have you logged what your fuel rail pressure is doing when that happens? What gear are you in when it happens? Rpm? You should really log parameters on what's happening when this occurs because we don't have much to go off of with just a code.

I'd be interested to know variability and repeatability in connection with time deep in the skinny pedal at what boost level(s). Then, is it REALLY limping, or just illuminating a dash lamp, and what happens to that indicator 2 minutes later.

hello again! Havent logged anything but it says "00428b - Boost pressure control low pressure stage, deviation"
It goes into real limp-mode at around 200km/h , often when shifting from gear 4 to 5 in wot. No lights just complete loss of power/boost until i restart the car. I have read out this information with the fault code in inpa, fuel pressure: 1699 bar boost pressure: 2.510 temps are OK. I think its maybe a faulty injector or so? many ppl seems to have this problem after DPF off. And there is really no real solution for it. Ok thanks! Can i get a better bolt on map-sensor? This OEM one is 2.5bar or ? |

I remember seeing somewhere on here that someone experienced the jbd ruining their fuel rail pressure sensor. Just a thought. A bad injector could be an issue but you should have injector codes. Have you talked to your tuner about this issue? Could be a tuning issue also. Boost looks good though my 335d requests about the same. Any weird noises when this happens?

Those remappers are well known here in sweden and telling me they have remapped tons on stage 2 35D´s so i dont think there is a problem with the tunes. Maybe some tuners just disable the limp mode function? Have google this problem in months and have been reading that if th boost pressure differ +/' 0.3 bar from set boost its trigger limp mode? My actually boost pressure VS set boost pressure can differ up to 0.5 bar some times, maybe there is a stuck wastegate? I have been filming my wastegate when applying vacuum to it with an vacuum-gun and its moving a little bit, dont know if its enough. I will remove the DP to check the movement of the WG on big turbo. i have new MAF-sensor, Map sensor, new VAC hoses, two new pressure konverters, new diesel filter, new air filter, removed swirl flaps. I have also tested vacuum when driving, with manual vacuum gauge and vacuum is perfect. There is no noises when this happen its just stops pulling and loss all boost pressure. Its like its cutting of all power when its hitting 2.51 bar of boost to protect the engine. I think i will start to change the R70 pump to a R90 one, my diesel pump is little bit wet on the back, like its leaking somewhere.
I got no codes on injectors. If its not an faulty diesel pump i anyway got the better R90 installed for future mods. I finded an refurbished R90 for 235 euros. *Does anyone know if i need to upgrade my map-sensor at any point? And to what sensor ? Or is stock MAP sensor good for ~450hp? * how far can I go with stock fuel pressure sensor (bar)? is there any upgrade? hello again, did check my wastegate today, is this normal? If i push it little bit more open (as in the end of video, it stays there but its only goes a little bit open by only vacuum).
i have adjust it a little bit now, dont think that solves the problem. |

I think so too.. but the fact that i have tested 3 differents maps had me to think that the car is broke in some way... but it seeems to that its not..?
I have stable fuel pressure all the time until i hit limp-mode , its seems that the problem is overboost ? Cant the remapper remove the overboost-limp mode? I have like 0.2-0.45bar "overboost" (set vs actual boost pressure differens) even when im cruise at 60-70mph on the highway.. The wastegate isnt stuck. |

Have you done any data logging to see your parameter behaviour when the limp mode happens. A simple rpm, pedal, speed, emp, boost desired, boost actual would do.

i have experience with this code with a E60 535D LCI Stage 2( Downpipe+Remap).
the solution was to make the port of the wastegate bigger from 10mm to 14/15mm. this will solve the overboosting problems. its a common problem with a M57TU2TOP when you remove the DPF. |

Now that I know more about this… if you’re running a r70 or r90 fuel pump. There is NO need for injectors and it actually is mostly likely the cause for the codes. Neither pump’s can supply enough fuel to support bigger injectors. Period. Our stock injectors are good for somewhere around 500whp which can be achieved with dual fuel pumps, valve springs and hybrid lp turbo. You can squeeze more out of them too if you go with the triple turbo setup…
If you want to run bigger injectors then you need to run dual fuel pumps, valve springs, and hybrids to get anything out of 100% injectors. The fastest x5d currently (BRR tuned) with that setup did a 11.61 1/4 mile @ 116.72 mph, which is more than 550whp. Id have to look up the 335ds with the same setup but I’m pretty sure with stock injectors they’re getting low 11s in the 1/4 mile.

Who searched it for me? Their fix was a retune, which probably adjusted fuel being requested. But the issue is because the r70 and r90 can’t support larger injectors.
