Just read this on the US M3 forum, thought it was quite apt after this thread today.
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=305726 ......all could be solved by fitting out cars with a spare wheel |

M3-FAST how apt ... makes you wonder why BMW don't just give everyone a spare wheel and jack

Just saw the story as well. Yup would be easier to throw in a jack and a space saver. Guess it all comes down to cost. I know the rft's are more expensive retail, but I'm sure these cost manufacturers the same as normal tyres.

Prior to ditching the RFTs.......
I've just asked my dealer to get me the light alloy spare in for Friday to look at for size / storage etc. Its only £156 all in, BMW OEM wheel and 125/80/R17 tyre: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...74&hg=36&fg=95 I know it won't fit under the boot floor, but at least I can chuck it in the roof box when we go to France or skiing. I'll keep it in the garage at home, as in my experience all my punctures have been spotted in the morning before work. Anything else and it'll be the goo!! |

Surely a space saver tyre and jack don't cost more than about £50 though?!
It's quite a pain. While I'm happy with my RFT tyres (having tall small ones!), I do want to get Contis on as soon as they wear out. Just not sure whether to go RFT or not. Dammit! |

Probably, but I'm an OEM fanatic, don't do cheap shit i'm afraid.... but neither do you 335d? Get your wallet out man.
The BMW jack kit was £80, but that comes with a preset torque wrench, wheel chock and a properly decent scissor jack with a ratchet winding handle, and of course it fits in the special BMW jack point whole, which normal jacks don't. And it comes in a lovely zip up bag with gloves The wheel is a nice BMW alloy with a tyre, so £150 not bad IMO. Anyway, I though of getting the spare even WITH RFTs. Especially when away in Europe. Can you imagine getting a puncture in France on a weekend??? ello ello? zee crazy ros-bifs. Where you gonna get your rarer than rockinghorse shit PS2 RFT from then or even a fitter to fit it if you did have one? Best find a bar and wait till monday afternoon. So its kind of a useful accesory with or without RFTs, - oh its called a spare - just like cars used to have!! |

Doughboy - I was guessing but that's from what the Astra (with 225/45 17" SportContact 3s) had - a cheapo looking steel wheel with what looked like a moped tyre.
Any links to the jack and spare at all? I think I'd want to be equipped if I went anywhere abroad. |

I'd just edited to say the overseas aspect was the most useful side of the spare....
Emergency wheel: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...74&hg=36&fg=95 The wheel and tyre is the top part number. But they do an 'emergency' jack kit shown also which looks like a smaller version of the full jack kit, so it may be cheaper. It looks like it comes with a roll case or something. The full jack kit: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...00&hg=71&fg=95 The 'box' shown is in fact a soft fabric zip case. I'll get some piccys of the spacesaver up here when I get it so you can see its relative size....... |

Still on the fence as to what to do for the next set and goo ruining a good trye would really wind me up. Went to see Muse last night over in Sheffield and cos the v.pregrant wife is only a few weeks away from being due, she really struggled with the ride in my car....then I started to be more aware how crashy it really is over poor roads (as oppossed to just pressing on and putting up with it). FYI - the 5er RFTs are still quite firm but are much smoother over pot hols etc.
