Hi everyone,

Any long term usage review about this paper clip method on 2010 335d US? Any problems that you had?

I am making very expensive cleaning because of CBU and would like to avoid this in the future. Because I have to pass a smog check, this change should be simply reversible, it is why I am interested in this method.

Thank you.

You can be chipped before the race pipe and have no egr.. And with the race pipe you'll need this mod anyway if you aren't chipped.

Yep, blocking the egr without mod OR chip will make the stock ecu kill power.

I was using this fix for year an a half on my 2014 X5 F15 35D. It works fine. My personal record was 5.2L/100km

I've been using this mod on my X5 35D since July/17. That was 40,000 KM ago and I haven't had any issues or objectionable CBU (confirmed my ISTA calculated and measured MAF CBU test).

2011 335d. 150k Miles. Currently getting carbon build up treatment. Going to attempt this "paperclip" mod, right away. Will consider these two options as things revolve.

Option 1:

https://www.tunemyeuro.com/bmw-335d-...ock-off-plate/

or

Option 2:

https://www.tunemyeuro.com/bmw-335d-...te-and-gasket/

If going for a tune I would absolutely get the race pipe and block off plates. That'll have to wait for now.

I want to do this but am having trouble understanding how to remove pin 5.
I have shifted the pink restraining tab however don't understand how folks are pushing the pin out the back of the connector. Does the shell need to be removed? If so, how is that done? In not how do I get the pin out?
Thanks for any help with this.

There's a shell around the connector with two push tabs at either end I believe on at the top and bottom. Take that off. Then put your paper clip in the hole as shown. And push it down and wiggle it and what not till you push the wire out. Getting the paper clip all the way down will take some time

I completed EGR cooler removal and plugged coolant lines.
Now, while in process of bleeding coolant, I am seeing coolant temp going to 105 C and then dropping down to 100 C.
Previously I recall typically getting 96 C as high.

For folks who have this setup, what coolant temps are you getting?
Thanks.
—————

Update
I re-bled coolant system and temps are now back to normal. Seeing high around 92 deg C.

Dang, I read through this whole thread and I'm still not convinced that performing this paperclip mod(even with cooler removal) won't cause me more issues down the road. I live in a SMOG required state and I'm looking for a way to delete the EGR and reinstall during SMOG dates. I realize the best way is to get the $650 tune and Race pipe but then come SMOG I'd have to send the ECU back to the tuner to get the stock tune and then send it back AGAIN after SMOG completion to get the purchased tune... again.... this just sounds ridicules.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

I could get it smogged by a dude illegally I’m sure but then I’ll also have the issue of trying to sell the car later. No one in my state will want a buy a car that doesn’t smog. Even if they do, I’ll never get that 700 bucks back.

Is the procedure the same on the F15's? It's a completely different system. I think I'm going to bring mine in for the egr recall and try to get intake replaced then do this until I can get tuned to keep it clean.

But they charge you to send the tool out to you. Unless you know of a different method.

Like so many others have posted, I did the paper clip mod on Friday. Took a long trip ~60 miles each way(Highway speeds with a few hills). The vehicle MPG went from 29-31 pre mod Now 34-37 same highways same speed. Air temps from 70f - 101f. A/C always on. With the super cool SES light

Parts are starting to fall off my car daily, just need time to send my control unit out for re calibration and I can finish fixing my car. Im not brave enough to swap out any other parts until I can get the calibration done.

Parts pending fix
swirl flaps
Cracked EGR
Silicone hoses
