Exhaust pause - is this normal.

Afternoon chaps,

I'm experiencing some abnormal behaviour with my exhaust and wondered if anyone has any insight into this. Not driven the car for couple weeks as I've had a few exams, last couple days on startup the exhaust would be as normal but every couple seconds would pause and continue. So when the smoke is coming out on cold start, on the pause the smoke would stop for a split second ...:

Has never happened before, the car is a e92 n55 335i..
I have a video, but can't seem to upload it...

Sounds like its got a misfire?
It won't be the exhaust pausing, it will be the engine.
I'd get it scanned for any faults.
Does it drive ok? Do it do it once warmed up?

Thanks dest..
You reckon it's a good idea to change the spark plugs ? I'm uploading the clip on to YouTube and then I'll post a link because I can't seem to upload it directly here..

Yea it drives absolutely fine, and once the 'cold start' is done it doesn't really happen, but occasionally really small ones..

If it's a stock car (without an altered flash) then something looks not quite right on the timing at idle, possibly idle when cold.
It's worth seeing if you can get codes off it.

Does a ppk from bmw count as a stock car ?
What's the best code reader to use..

If you flashed the ppk onto it then that may explain the change in timing. I've never seen a car running the ppk so I don't know. Ask on here and other BMW forums or have a search on youtube.

Some of the flashes I've used have had similar effects to what yours is doing. It can even be by design with the cam timing overlap etc to sound meatier at idle.

I use my JB4 for reading codes and MHD flasher. I also use the carly app with wifi ODBII dongle. If you have some way of connecting to the ODB then you can probably get a free app to read codes. Cable's are cheap on places like ebay. Always handy to have.

I agree, it just sounds like a lumpy idle, nothing to worry about really.
Might be worth checking for fault codes just for peace of mind

I had a BMW E36 316i.. I only ever got to drive it on the front garden because the insurance was about 6k.. I think I paid £250 for the car haha.

But a 335i while doing exams.. have to envy that haha.
