Dinan Stage 3 Suspension Upgrade - Stay Tuned

Hi everyone:

I have finally pulled the trigger on the Dinan Stage 3 for my 2009 335i xDrive Coupe.

The work will be done by Bob Miller and the guys from At Speed Motorsports in Hannover, MD. www.atspeedmotorsports.com

Bob will be taking pictures and we will compile a detailed before and after analysis.

I've also purchased 18" Style 313 BMW Performance Wheels from Tischer (Thanks Evan).

Since my OEM tires have only 7,000 miles, we are putting them on the 313 wheels.

The stock 189 style wheels are getting Bridgestone Blizzak RFTs from Tire Rack. They will go on the car for the winter.

When we are done, I hope to have the ultimate daily driver.

Stay tuned for pictures and analysis.

Dave

what is it that you decided to get Dinan S3 instead of a coilover setup like KW v3?

At Speed Motorsports

The car is in the At Speed shop, and all the parts are being shipped.

My goal is to optimize handling, specifically turn-in and sharpness. I am looking to recreate the driving dynamics of my 1995 M3, balanced with xDrive practicality that will ensure I make it home safely.

It was not about a "drop," although cosmetically, it needs one to look right.

Dave, I have used Atspeed for my LSD and BMW performance suspension install. Rich's (shop lead) work is outstanding. Can't wait to hear about your experience and how happy you are with the product.

Are you going to their open house 10/16 at 11am? Should be a great chance to see some sweet cars.

Please also post a thread with your experience in the mid atlantic forum. -Thanks.

At Speed

The car should be finished next week, and I am hoping to interview Steve Dinan at the At Speed open house.

I was recently speaking with Bob Miller from Atspeed about a 335xi Dinan suspension setup. He was very helpful, I found him to be quite knowledgeable. He mentioned they were currently working on a dinan stage 3 for a 335xi... I bet that would be your car, no?

I'm very interested to hear your opinion/review. Don't forget to post pics!

Thanks

it is physically impossible to recreate a 3200lb e36 m3 feeling in a 3600+lb awd sedan

A stunning transformation

I picked up the car yesterday from At Speed Motorsports, and all I can say is that the transformation is stunning.

The car handles great. The turn-in is precise and really quick. It is flat and there is virtually no body roll.

The xDrive system now feels like an asset in the handling, and you can feel the front wheels pull through the turns. It is very confidence-inspiring.

The ride is great and I think it is just right. It is firm without being bone-jarring.

The 18" Style 313 BMW Performance wheels look awesome. The car looks unique, but still OEM, which is exactly what I was going for.

The car is lowered, but not "slammed." (I'd like the front to be a bit lower, but overall I will accept the compromise.)

Interestingly, the car was significantly out of alignment, and Bob Miller is a genius with the alignment settings, which surely contributed to the transformation.

I'm working with Bob from At Speed Motorsports to write-up a more technical story and will post pictures soon.

I'll also be interviewing Steve Dinan during the At Speed open house in October.

Stay tuned for more details, but if you are considering this upgrade, I strongly recommended it and suggest you give Bob from At Speed a call.

Great review. This is exactly what I'm going for - a well tuned daily driver (not looking for a stiff track set up or a lowered show car)

Can you PM me what you paid for parts and install if you don't feel comfortable posting here? I'll be looking into this next year!

First Photos

I am not a photographer, but here are some shots from this morning.

The car is lowered about 1" all around.

The first shot with the tape measurer is the front. Some may feel like the it further lowering, but I guess that is personal preference.

The second shot with the tape measurer is the rear. To me, it looks perfect.

Did they update rear subframe bushings and rear upper/lower control arms? Were they able to update anything up front other than new springs/dampers?

Edit: I went and looked. S3 suspension appears to be springs, camber plates and rear sway bar. Any damper changes or other M3 bits?
