Kids trapped in cave in Thailand

I'm sure you all join me in hoping things work out for these kids sooner than later. This has got to be SO frightening for them and everyone else involved as they struggle to find a solution.

From: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/...KaG?li=BBnbfcL

Quote:
CHIANG RAI, Thailand — The huge international rescue effort to get a boys' soccer team and their assistant coach out of a cave deep under a mountain in northern Thailand continued on Thursday, with a final solution still unclear. CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy says rescuers are now looking for other entrances into the cave from above, to see if there is a chance they might be able to airlift the boys out.

That search for another option comes amid worries that heavy rains forecast for this weekend could again flood the cave and make any rescue attempt impossible.

Emergency workers are racing to pump out excess water from the flooded Tham Nuang Lang Non cave system, trying to bring the levels down so it's safer to attempt to rescue the boys.

They're drilling through rocks to make room for hoses, which have already helped remove more than 31 million gallons of water.

About 2.5 miles from the main cave entrance, doctors are......

Been following this story as well. Not sure why in politics but anyway, hope they learn to scuba and get out soon. Really a bizarre story.

I had some friends who were into cave diving in college, in central Texas. Very very dangerous. Getting these kids out will be very very tricky!

You'd think before going miles into a cave that is known for flooding, that you would check the weather before going in. Rain in the forecast, don't go in.

I feel for the kids and their families. Prayers for their safe return home.

JG. It's in politics because there doesn't seem to be better place to get the most exposure - watches, sports, health in off-topic doesn't nearly fit- agree?

Story is none of them even know how to swim according to local authorities.

Highly doubt that couch will survive though.....

Talking about them being in there for months, and learning to scuba seems crazy considering they are already applying iodine to sores on their feet. . .

One claims to have heard a rooster crowing, so they are thinking there must be a path to the surface that doesn't lead thru water.

It's quite amazing. My thought would be they would take one out at at time with two divers. No need to teach them how to swim. Basically string a dive line through the cave and have them pull themselves along with a pro in front and behind. The biggest obstacle is going to be panic. They will have to get comfortable under water...perhaps with a full diving mask. Take the strangers 'swimmers' out first. Kids are pretty damn tough...they survived 10 days in the pitch black so my bet is they all make it.

Saw on the news today that it takes 6 hours for divers to get to them and 5 hours to get back out. Just crazy.

This is absolutely terrifying. I cant even imagine. They are now saying that the "dry" area they are in may flood when the heavy rains hit.

I'm just shaking my head at this story...I feel for them and their families, but this is darwinism at its best.

Take kids, who can't swim into a cave system that is dangerous and prone to flooding during the rainy season...bright idea!

I hope for their safe return. Too bad a life was lost because of someone's stupid decision.

This entire situation escapes my understanding. Why would anyone take those boys into a cave ill-prepared? The fact that they are barefoot in a cave system is mind boggling. What the hell was going through the mind of the coach??? "Great job today boys! Let's make a pit-stop in a dangerous cave without any gear/supplies and hope like hell everything will be ok." I can't imagine the level of distress the parents are feeling. I did not realize originally when I heard of this story, just how bad the exit routes are submerged. If that was one of my children in there, the coach's remaining days would be filled with fear of my recourse.

An experienced Thai Seal diver died today. Getting these kids out safely is going to be very difficult. Hope there are very smart people coming up with some alternatives. Strapping these kids with diving equipment is not a good option IMO.

I didn't realize it was taking 6 hours for divers to reach them. The fake news showed a few shallow depressions that had water, not the whole 1.1 miles they were in.

One thing to keep in mind is that Thailand is still a somewhat developing country. Access to proper hiking equipment is hard to come by, especially for locals. So I’m not surprise they made the hike into the cave with no supplies and gear.

Not the entire cave is underwater, just pockets of it are. But along the route are tight spots where divers had to take off their tanks to squeeze through and some spots have strong currents. So it will be a difficult trek out.

From a story I read yesterday that a company that specialized in diving equipment have sent full dive mask designed for kids to their location. Expert divers are giving them a crash swimming course hoping the kids can get comfortable in water. One plan is to have station expert divers at strategic check points along the way and have them guide each kid out one by one. Although with that plan may be scrap after the latest incident with the seal diver.

Unless you are Elon Musk apparently. I suppose he felt they either didn't have any engineers over there, or his were that much better. I heard he is sending a team of engineers over there.

But hey, if they happen to get the kids out, I won't be complaining. Has to be terrifying for them.

Problem is, they are too close to Australia and someone said walkabout.

But seriously, my understanding is they had to keep moving to find dry sections with air. Which they are running out of.

From what I've read, the diver that died was delivering oxygen to the kids in the cave but didn't save enough for himself on the way back. A freakin hero...
