Apple CarPlay is finally a free feature in BMW vehicles

$639 bucks to prepare it seems. no, Thank you. happy with the BMW interface and my android. for some reason only for iphone8

so preparation is charged and then it's free? doesn't make sense..

they likely realized they were spending more engineering hours on a bmw connect systems outage (which caused carplay to go down) than it was worth to just write the integration code.. set it and forget it

plus the awful optics of nickle and dime which german manufacturers already have a rep for

While I didn't use CarPlay until the past month when I figured out that my Tunein Radio app works MUCH better with it, my current new-car subscription ends on 12/15. My ConnectedDrive page still shows the subscription renewal charges as others are seeing so I called the 1-888# to ask a rep about the announcement. I asked specifically about the end of the subscription cost requirement to continue using and after checking with a supervisor, she told me the announcement story was a hoax...there will continue to be a subscription cost.

For now I'm taking this with a grain of salt, but I'm getting the rear camera software recall done next week and will ask my dealer at that time. Any new/additional information should be much better communicated through the dealer network or BMW NA by then if this is true. I hope it is because I don't want to pay to continue using it.

Delete your phone. Reconnect your phone to the car. When prompted to connect to CarPlay select CarPlay. Once the phone is connected to the car, go into media, then manage phones and you will see the option to connect using BMW or CarPlay. You can select either one. If you want to change from say BMW mode to CarPlay, you just go back into manage phones and select CarPlay and the phone will connect via CarPlay. Once CarPlay is set up, going to manage phones will allow you to go back and forth. Hope this helps.

Yep. I only use CarPlay when I have Waze running. Otherwise I use BMW mode.

Yeah I paid $600 for lifetime activation about 6 months ago.

It's now free. There are more important things in life to have a whinge about. Good luck to the people that now get it for free.
