N54 Downpipes?

I'm considering getting downpipes. So there are downpipes that remove the catalytic converter (catless) and ones that don't, is this correct? Are catless ones illegal and ones that don't remove the catalytic converter legal?

Will I pass smog? Also, do people notice that things smell different with catless downpipes?

Catless for me. And the smell is almost exactly the same as stock. Remember on then coupe you have 2 sets of cats.

They are both "illegal" in the sense that you are altering your car's emissions system.

I believe you won't be able to pass emissions test (smog check) in california with a catless system.
