Nope, because the stations I go to is only 1 of 2 in Northern NJ and all the GTR, Porsche, BMW, turbo anything goes there. The guys running the pump know exactly what we're there for

I get that look all the time, and they really go nuts when I get in and move to the next pump for 91 octane.

I get it all the time in my 335i. People ask me about it, so I explain it to them. They get bored halfway through and kinda wished they hadn't asked, it is funny. I also have a 2008 flexfuel Tahoe, and nobody bats an eye when I put e85 in that thing lol.

I get that look whenever I fill my 5 gallon diesel tank of e85. Always get a double take.

it's funny...when i first started going to the Newark Gulf they were a little confused. Now they ask me how much E85 and how much 93 I want and they know the drill. there's usually at least one subie or evo there filling up when i'm there too LOL

on a related topic, i have an E40 protune from Jake@PTF. It's easy to figure out using an online calculator how to get E40 when you have no E85 in the tank. But how do you guys handle managing the content with a depleted E85/93 mix? Basically what I did last time was figure there was about 2.4 gallons of fuel left in the car, 40% of which was ethanol. I think it worked out to like 1.1 gal of ethanol. so I added 5.5 gal of E85 and then filled the rest up with 93. sound right?

How did you determine there was ~2.4 gallons left in the car??

The easy way to do it IMO is to always fill the same concentration....So for example since you are doing E40 mixes for your protune...When you are running low just go to the station and fill in another 40% e85 mix/ 60% pump (2 gallons e85:3 gallons pump ratio approx which is about 38-40%)...Always fill up the same concentration and it makes it easier for the next fillup...I always error on the side of a little extra E85 to prevent timing drops or an overly aggressive map for the % of e85 (due to the batch, station, season, etc)..

Word of advice, if you ever throw the concentrations off its always a pain to get back to square one...So its easier to keep it consistent.

P.S.: I wish I had a flex fuel sensor

The only look i get is from the Evos/Stis waiting in line for the E85. We exchange the evil eye, and go our separate ways.

by looking at the 'ticks' on the gas gauge. each tick is 0.8 gal.

I want to make sure we're saying the same thing...my car is tuned for 40% ethanol, NOT 40% E85. jake originally told me to do 6.5 gal E85 and the rest 93 (which is 10% ethanol) so that works out to E40. It's trickier for me when there's already a mix in the tank. does your proportion still hold? we really need a flexfuel sensor. I understand PTF is working on an integrated gas tank with upgraded lpfp in the bucket and in line flex fuel sensor integrated into it. I'll donate sperm and buy this.

Ok noob question, What does it take to run E85? Is the 335i set to run it, or is there a fuel ratio change using a jb4 or something? Second, i assume it gives it a bit more power, and obviously less MPG?

I guess the other way I could do it is if I'm around a 1/4 tank of E40 just forget what's in there and do 4.8 gal E85 and 7.2 gal 93...that is also E40 so adding E40 to E40 gives...E40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotcha...Ive personally just never liked the idea of taking the gas gauge for fact since I know about how the remaining reserve fuel affects those readings..

Yeah I know what you mean....PTF tuned for E40 (40% ethanol content)....

If I calculate a 2 gallon E85 / 3 gallon pump gas mix like I was saying above:

2 gallons E85 x 0.85 = 1.70 gallons Ethanol
3 gallons Pump x 0.10 = 0.30 gallons Ethanol

Total Ethanol content = 2.00 gallons Ethanol / 5.00 gallons total = 40% Ethanol content OR E40

The above calculations are done assuming your stations normal pump gas:

1) has a minimum of 10% ethanol mixed into it
2) also that the E85 your getting from your station is a full 85% ethanol content

So to be safe due to these two factors I always error on the side of slightly more E85 than less....So in your case when Jake said 6.5 gallons and the rest topped off with E85 is a good ratio when your completely empty...(Since 6 gallons E85: 9 gallons Pump) is a similar ratio to what I was mentioning above...Im sure Jake told you to do the extra .5 just for safety and caution...I also recommend the extra amount for safety...so even though I said a 2 gallon E85: 3 gallon Pump ratio always put a little more e85 in....But for simplicity sake 2:3 is a good ratio to start....Id personally do something like 2.2 gallons: 3 gallons to be more safe..

Sorry I know this can be a bit confusing and also I wrote this without proofreading...let me know if it makes sense

Exactly what im saying!! As long as you have some sort of E40 mix in your tank already...when you add another E40 mix in it will always be consistent!

yeah I guess i was just hung up on filling the tank entirely and trying to incorporate the existing mix into the calc for some reason. no need to do this though.

Thanks @BuraQ...that's the calculator I was using to determine mix for a full tank.
