N54 sound around oil/air filter
Hi Guys,
Please help me, some time ago I noticed strange noise around the oil filter/air filter place. I've searched in forum and in yt and I found the same symptom - one Guy posted it on yt, please see below link, it starts in 3-5 second and in 9-11: Maybe anyone know it? I think it's pulley as there is nothing arround what can make this sound but I would like to be sure. Belt is quite new nothing suspicious arround it. Car has 167k km, oil changed 2k km ago for Millers 0w40, new Mann filters aswell, sound was before change and stays till now. engine runs smooth and quiet escept this matter. Please help ! |

No mods, everything is stock
There is no sound arround downpipes, it's located near oil filter/air filter. I've checked with my friend to be sure about location. I was suspecting also alternator or maybe fuel pump but no affect on engine idle... Spark plugs are new, coils checked twice if any did not loose, radiator is checked aswell. I'm totally lost |

Hard to say how many km was done after changing belt or pulleys. I did only 2k km since I bough the car, belt seems to be in good shape... Is there any procedure to check the pulleys if they are ok or no ?

You can get a belt and pulley kit for about $150.00 or so. It's not a huge investment. If it isn't the issue, it's one thing to certainly be able to cross off your list as a potential. Pulleys shouldn't wobble of make noise from manually spinning them. Other than the vacuum hose near the OFH, there is nothing else there that would make noise. If I heard a wine, I'd say it was your Power Steering Pump, but I didn't hear that. |

Same exact noise on my 07 335i coming from the same area. I thought it was coming from one of the idler pulleys or tensioner so I replaced the belt, tensioner and both idler pulleys. No more noise but I will add that While in the process I saw that my belt was worn in one area where it looked like it made contact with the subframe. Pulled off the power steering pulley and sure enough the pulley had almost all of the rear edge of the pulley broken, presumably from contacting the subframe. I replaced it as well and no noises now. But I’m going to replace the motor mounts and probably shim the mount up a bit as well.
Not saying you might have the same power steering pulley problem but I’m glad I checked it while I was there. Also when I inspected the old parts they all seemed to be in good shape with the exception of the belt and power steering pulley. The old tensioner and idler pulleys were fine. |
