Hi, folks! I'm hoping someone can answer a question for me. I'm running a JB4 G5 with an MHD installed back-end flash on my 2008 335i. I've installed a few mods already, and now want to upgrade the downpipes to catless versions. I understand that catless DPs will likely cause the "check engine" light to come on unless I do something to prevent it, such as installation of the VRSF downpipe "fix". My question is this: Can I avoid installing a "fix" by using settings in either the JB4 or the MHD BEF? For example, I remember that when I installed the flash, MHD gave me an "options" screen asking if my car has catalytic converters or not. If I indicate that I do not have these, will that setting keep me from getting a warning light? Or perhaps there is another setting that will achieve this. I'd like to find this out before I take the plunge, so that I can order everything I need before starting the install.

Yes. Mhd uncheck oem cat, turns off cat monitor. Emmisions passs

you dont have to install the dp fix. im just running mhd with kittyless pipes and i have no dash light. i flash a while back but it should be a setting in mhd.

MHD has a feature that shuts off the error code associated with catless downpipes. You shouldn't have anything to worry about.

VRSF makes a good Catless downpipe.

Error codes would show up but not the check engine light. That is how is set up for trouble shooting.

One of you recommended the VRSF pipes . . . . I'm strongly considering those, as so far everyone is giving them rave reviews. Has anyone tried the MMP? They're selling them for a killer price right now, and in general I like that company's products. Judging by the pictures they look to be beautifully made, but I'm not seeing a whole lot of reviews.

You need to consider :

MMP

VRSF

Arm Motorsports

I have the ARM FMIC & MMP inlets & outlets. I can attest to the quality of their products.

MMP probably has the best prices for inlets & outlets. If you decide to get an FMIC, you'll need a charge pipe. Cobb, IMO, makes a really good one.

Just because you install a tune to rid of the CEL after going castles doesn't mean you will pass e-test. When you flash a tune all it will do is disable the monitor on Evap and Cats. When your car is being scanned for an e-test, depending on where you live only "one" or "two" not ready status indicators will be allowed, so it's either the cats or the evap. I know some people pass with a specific tune since on some custom tunes evap is still enabled, on mhd tunes it's disabled (not ready), so you might need an o2 sim (dp fix)

As for the gentleman who offered his opinion on VRSF, MMP and ARM Motorsports, you and I seem to think alike! I already have an ARM intercooler, VRSF Inlets and a Cobb chargepipe. While I really like the ARM intercooloer, I've studied pics of the downpipes and was concerned that they seem drastically necked down in the final inch before the junction with the midpipes -- but of course this is just a picture, and I've never seen the real thing. Right now the MMPs are on sale for the same price as ARM.

IMO, it's hard to go wrong w/ MMP. Go for it. Let's us know your opinions, post some pics.

My only advice to you would be to get new gaskets between the mid-pipes & the Cats. Burger Motorsports makes a nice set for $20.00. I'd also upgrade the bolts, washers & nuts that secure the cats to the mid-pipes to grade 8 & liberally apply nickel based anti-seize to them. Nickle based is good up to 2500 degrees. You'll be able to get back in there anytime you want with no issues.

I'd also replace the turbo seals, while your in there. They are pretty inexpensive at about $20.00.

If you are over 100,000 miles, now is a GREAT time to replace your pre-cat O2 sensors.
