2nd... I believe Shiv and FFTEC have taken apart a 06 build N54 to confirm this. I saw a thread on this awhile ago.

Every single N54 ever made - for any BMW ever made, has a forged crank, forged rods, and cast pistons. It does not matter what car you drive, if it came from BMW with an N54 that's the deal.

Look it up on wikipedia great explanation, hypereutectic pistons also have less expansion so engineers can specify tighter cold tolerances.
