18"/19" rims on 320i

Hi,

Having never put big wheels on a BMW before, I'm wondering a couple of questions about rims.

I'm sourcing some 18" or 19" rims for a 320i and wondering if they might be too big for the car? Will they scrap the sides of the tyres or hit the underside of the car on small bumps? I'm running standard suspension, is it recommended to stiffen the suspension first?

Also, with bigger rims, does that effect performance much? I'm assuming the bigger rims take more power to turn as the circumference is longer than the standard 16". But I might be completely wrong here.

Also, can you get low profile run flats for 18"/19" rims, and if so would you recommend?

Does anyone have any advice?

BTW great forum, so much useful info.

I have 19"'s, they go perfectly on a 320 and no change in performance since the overall diameter with the tyres on is the same plus if you look at the tyre/wheel sizing card when you open the driver door(on the door pillar), 19" is an acceptable size for the car. I would only suggest you use non runflats on 19"s or be prepared for a bumpy ride on runflats!

with bigger wheels you need to compensate with a lower side wall on your tyre. I don't know what the stock wheels/tyres are on a 320 but for instance (not real numbers just an example) if you have a 17" rim with a 225/45 profile on a 19" you would look for something like a 225/35 profile and the resultant tyre will be the same as stock but you have a larger rim.

OK, so really no difference in diameter.

With non-RF, what do you do if you get a puncture?

If you get the wheels in the correct offset and tyre size you will not experience any scrubbing at all (assuming standard or Msport ride height) and ride comfort is reasonably good on non run flat tyres.

Have a look at the bmr website (in my sig) to see if there are any wheels you like.

I'll get back to you about the Performance Exhaust soon as well

Cheers,
Stu @ BMR

I have a BMW space saver spare(max speed 80kmph with them on), think someone had one for sale here a while ago if you want one, think was WOPALX. You could also use one of your existing wheels temporarily I guess if had a flat(need confirmation on that).

Just had 18"wheels installed with new tires on my 320i. I had it done at a BMW specialty shop. Looks and runs great. I was told not to go over 19" though.
