Soon to be New Owner - Warranty Advice

Hi guys

I'm about to take ownership of a 2008 335i E93

It's done 84k so i'm expecting to see some issues coming very soon after collecting it so i'm keen to cover myself with some warranty.

I've read here that BMW offer the best, but it's £76 per month for comprehensive with £250 excess (and no Emergency Service).

This is quite a bit more than the warranty through "Which" but i've no idea how good that one is........

Any thoughts on this, and on a decent warranty company guys?

Cheers

Working for BMW I can tell you the BMW warranty itself is probably the best out there, however, I would make sure you read the small print / exclusions as there is a lot that they will not cover, there's also upper limits on the value of the cover (I believe the limit of cover is the purchase price of the vehicle) so you're gonna want to make sure you've got evidence of purchase price and keep hold of it. I believe it also has a mileage limit of 100k miles, relies heavily on the service history of the vehicle being present & correct and a whole host of other factors.

Will give you the T's & C's!

£76 a month!!!! I’m amazed they will even offer a warranty on an 11 year old car.
My advice, for what it’s worth, would be to buy the car carefully, having it checked over by the AA or similar then put the £76 in a ‘just in case’ savings account. That’s nearly a grand a year that you can spend on any repairs should you need to. The warranty is going to have a lot of exemptions probably whereas your savings won’t.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate the feedback.
I have ClickMechanic coming out on Tuesday so will have an idea of how up together the car is in general.

I'll take your advice and set myself up a "just in case" account

Garage List
You'll need more than £76 a month to cover the likely repairs on a 35i

Ah, now thats more of what I was expecting!

Does the BMW warranty cover HPFP, turbos, westgate and injectors? (just a few of the main issues i've heard about)

Yes it does.. mine is a 2006 335i which I have had covered by the BMW warranty since 2014 when the car was on about 55000 miles. At that time I was paying £40 a month and now its on 104000 and I'm paying £49 a month.

The warranty has more than paid for itself over the years last year the injectors were all replaced by BMW after diagnosing labour and parts the final bill was just over £3K.. I don't know how its that expensive... well we know why its the labour costs.. but it was all covered by the warranty.

The premiums I have paid over the years that I have had the warranty don't come close to the amount of money it would have cost for the various repairs that have been done on my car since I have owned it so personally I think its worth the money.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.
How do you manage to get it so cheap? (compared to my £79 per month quote on 84k)

Just did a quote for my 2010 E92 LCI 320i and it came out as £76 too.

Thinking I might go for the Driveline warranty instead, only £47 but covers most of the really expensive items.

It does say that you need to provide evidence of service having been carried out, so i might have to suck it up and pay for a visit to the dealers before i insure it though as my history is a bit sketchy.

Any thoughts on WarrantyWise? They seem to have pretty good feedback

Well, they're 7 quid cheaper for slightly more bits covered, which on the face of it look good, but I'd be interested to know if anyone has a comparison.

Bmw warranty is worth every penny. I’ve got it on my E90 and mini. I pay about £48 for the E90 and £38 for the mini with £100 excess. It’s nearly half the price if your car is on less than 60k when you take it out.

I’ve had all different things done, minis had wheel bearing and an alternator. E90 has had glow plug module and a clutch and fly wheel. Last week the e90 was in for a service and I mentioned it had a slight hunt on idle. Apparently a bad quality fuel issue so they replaced the entire fuel system front to back at a cost of £6k! Bmw have paid every time and never argued once. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

Mine is £49 currently as well and I think the lower price comes from those like me who’ve had dealer/auc warranty in place throughout the life of the car with FBMWSH. If it’s been continuous coupled with aforementioned service history I believe it can extend beyond the 100k mark but obviously they’ll put up a stiffer fight at times. Overall I think I’ve had about £8k worth of work done and paid nowhere near that. £100 excess each time for the following:

Timing chain guide snapped shenanigans and all associated parts/labour - £1800 x 2 (went second time within 15k miles) so £3600

Balance shafts/new oil pump + labour etc £1500

Brand new Rear diff (because of noise) + labour etc £1500 ish

New exhaust section (including catalytic converter) £1800, this was changed after dealer tried to say I needed a new flexi shaft due to split. Crap design on N43 means no repair kit. Warranty agreed I needed section not flexi “part”. catalytic converter is only part of exhaust covered. Shame it’s a one piece section that’s attached to flexi

All up about £8400, and car runs like a dream. I sleep easy for my £49 per month.

So, after much deliberation, and waiting on hold trying to talk to BMW warranty for 15 minutes, I got a call from WarrantyWise.

They had picked up my online quotation, and offered to talk it through with me, and maybe sort out a better deal.

I've ended up with their 8/80 plan (up to 8 years old or 80000 miles), which covers all of the driveline, plus most of the rest, and they upgraded me to cover the "emissions" which includes the cat for an extra 7 quid. (They had already upgraded me to the 8/80 plan from the 10/100 plan as the car was only 3 months over the age limit, and way under on the mileage)

All of that comes out at £47.49 per month, less than BMW wanted for the driveline only. (£100 per hour labour rate, £100 excess, £5000 single claim)

They weren't pushy at all, and were very helpful and efficient. We'll see how it turns out

I've had a warranty direct policy on 2 separate cars in the past and both times needed to claim the best part of 2k in one go and it was pretty seamless. admittedly the BMW warranty I have had on most of my cars is alot easier with a couple of less hoops to jump through but all in all I think if your car has a FSH at reputable dealerships at the required intervals then an aftermarket warranty should suffice.

Warranty Direct offer cover that will pay out for dealer rates too if you pay a little extra.

How does a claim work with Warranty Direct?

Do you pay and reclaim?

Can you use non-BMW garages?

According to them, you select a garage of your choice, and they can either deal direct or through you, whichever you and the garage prefer.

Can be an Indy.

I think they just pay the garage direct too, less any excess.

330-S can probably tell you more from his experiences.

+1 for Warranty Direct.

When I bought my e90 330i the dealer threw in Warranty Direct cover. I was impressed enough to renew it for another year.

There are limitations to the cover (depending on what you pay, on my cover they only cover £50 ph labour or diagnostic fees) but you can take the car to a garage of your choice.

My local garage don't like to deal with warranty companies so I just get the diagnostic information and quote from the garage and pass it on to WD. Then come payment I pay the garage and WD reimburse me the amount we've agreed. That way I deal with WD, the garage deal with me and I don't end up paying the full whack for repairs.
