Advice on buying used from BMW dealer.

I'm looking into an 09 328i x drive for my wife (and for me to mod)

Mississauga BMW had one off lease

2009 328i x drive with 54000 km (that's what caught my eye) and warranty until Sept 2015 or 160,000 km

I do have concerns about buying used,

... I've always bought new, except my gixxer ( bikes aren't as costly as an E90)

... it had a car proof claim of $1780 on rear center bumper * no structural damage all work done by BMW so it must be mostly Labour

.... it's from Quebec... Normal / clean title from what the car proof says.

It's a certified series but looking from some advice from others who have bought pre owned from dealerships.. I feel I'm just being paranoid but I can't help it...

Test drove it and it was very nice

Thanks in advance

Lease cars are typically very poorly maintained. Nobody changes the oils or fixes anything because who cares it's a lease.

I'd find a private party car still owned by the original owner with full BMW service records and extended BMW Gold warranty.

My vehicle I purchased from the dealership, it was also a previous lease car. Learn from my mistakes and DO NOT purchase it. The vehicle seemed to drive fine when I test drove it. With most lease vehicles it was probably bagged to hell. But given my test drive etc, I probably should have drove harder too during my test drive. As soon as I purchased the vehicle, every week I noticed one issue after another. Even though it was "Certified Pre-Owned" sale now and they claimed to have "inspected" it fully. Go figure, my first BMW and might be my last after this experience. Windshield fluid was leaking and always empty the next day, and I discovered this within days after purchase. And they said it was my fault. Warranty issues not honored. A headache and a half fighting for recall issues. Problems with electrical that was due to "my error", seems like the previous owner did something to the electrical - not sure what, but this caused future problems that are now my problem because I can't prove I had nothing to do with it. Please please please, do NOT purchase a used BMW. I've got bills and bills and bills to show you that nothing was covered under my Certified Warranty, and everything was paid out of my own ass.

I purchased my first BMW (2006 325i) CPO from the dealer and any issues i had were quickly dealt with no questions asked. Maybe mention the dealer who you're buying from and see how service is because it can make or break your ownership experience. The CPO warrenty is very nice to have and a 328 is a great car, check for maintenance records and look the car over yourself very carefully.

how much dealer is asking ? Extended warranty from 3rd party or BMW factory ? Ask for details what are covered, if it's 3rd party. Your concern should be focusing the electronics, suspension, tranny, engine, etc as they are the most expensive to repair as 3rd party warranty may not cover 100% of these sort of items.

CPO does not mean a whole lot to me, dealer does not have to give you new brakes as long as it passes safety, thus you may be left with brakes just good enough to drive around for a few months more. Tires are the same thing. Bottom line is if you express deeper interest in this car, you should have it checked by another bmw mechanic.

If it's around $18K + taxes, then it's very fair. Any more than this would be ridiculous, IMO.

I bought CPO too never had a problem, but when I was looking to buy a car, i was told never ever buy anything from Montreal or Quebec due to the large amount of snow salt they have to use every year. it's bad for the cars apparently.

I got mine CPO but the owner was a lady had it for about 2 years only and drove less than 40k. I am still driving it and has no problem whatsoever. make sure you get a reasonable discount. Give them an offer that they might want to refuse and just keep looking. One of them will just call you very soon. These CPO cars must be sold asap so they are willing to negotiate.

If you really like the car then it comes down to how good the price is and how bad you want it.

I would however, consider the following:

1. If you plan on selling later the value will be detrimentally affected due to the claim. This makes it harder to sell and less valuable.

2. If you are keeping it and are ever involved in a total loss, the insurer will pay only market value. Again, that will be reduced given your vehicle has already had problems.

I say you take a little more time and really choose your vehicle carefully
