I curently drive an 335i Coupe with manual gearbox and love it.

I am just speccing up a new car (335i Coupe again as it will go round corners faster than an X6 - no offense to x6 owners) and am very tempted to go for the DCT Auto option this time. I like the sound of the DSG/DCT technology giving me the best of both worlds, buts whats it like in real life???

Any feedback or experiences will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure how much I'm selling it for just yet. Once I have ordered a new one and got a delivery date I will reserch into prices closer the time.

It will not be traded in and will be offered on here at a realistic price. People on here will appreciated the condition and the spec more than any stealer ever will. It took me a long time to find a car with this spec, so I know it will appeal to an enthusiast.

I test drove an M3 with DCT last week. Very impressed. Miles smoother, quicker and in particular more responsive than the old auto. Better than my Golf's DSG (as you'd expect.) BMW may comeate to the party, but they come well dressed.

I had a 335i with DCT and now an M3 with DCT - BEST THING EVER!! You wont regret.

I know i would get DCT in any BMW i get that offers it

You have answered your own question.. Stay with manual. I'm sure you will miss it if you go auto!!

Your current E92 looks stunning in Silver. Will it be the 'usual' Alpine White with red leather next?

I think my 335i manual is fantastic and would definitely stick with that over a conventional auto box.

But .. I did like the SMG box in the e46 M3 and the DCT sounds rather more like that than a conventional slush box. The 7 gears also mean that MPG at motorway cruising speeds is MUCH improved.

I would give it serious thought.

My DCT only has 7 forward gears.

I was set on a manual as I'd never drove an automatic before. After over 6 months of ownership I am impressed with the DCT and really like it when pushing on and sticking it in automatic when in town. I never got to drive a manual 335i so can't compare.

If I was buying another 335i I'd go for the manual. The reasons being a change from what I currently have, otherwise it would feel like the same car and obviously the cost implications.

Before I got my E92 335i manual I tried a 335i DCT over a full 24 hours. There is no doubt this is a most impressive system, absolutely instant full power gear changes, no creep from rest, very smooth overall, and a bit more economical (thanks to the 7th gear) than the 6 speed manual.

I then tried the 335i manual. Totally different experience, so much more involving, OK it's a bit slower 0-62 because of the time it takes you to change gear, but that does not worry me. In fact I rather enjoy the total control and the way you hear the change in exhaust note as you change gear. In the DCT, even using the paddles, the gears just slur into each other so fast that you don't get the same audible feedback.

Both are great cars and I am in no way knocking the DCT, it's up to you to try one and see how you feel about it. In the end I think the question of auto vs manual is programmed into our genes, with I think a clear majority preferring the DCT (hence the difficulty of finding late model 335i manuals).

I should add that I am retired, and so I can choose more or less when and where I drive. If I were still working and had to commute into and around London, then it would be a whole different scenario. In those circumstances I actually think I would plump for the super high torque 335d along with its traditional 6 speed auto box, which I think just happens to suit that car and engine fantastically well.

For me the whole part of the 'drive' is shifting gears, heal&toe etc.

So no way I'd convert unless forced. The system is slick but....
It's what's ultimately so engaging -shifting gears- especially in a fast car, and definately on a track.

Manuals for men.
Paddles for people in boats.

Thanks guys - I will obviously try a DCT before deciding, but good to get the feedback.

I'm sure neither option will dissapoint and with doing approx 25 miles a day to work and back I have no real need for the auto but quite fancy a change if nothing else.

Im not sure yet - possibly black with saddle brown/Coral Red or Space Grey with Coral Red. Also considering Ruby Black but haven't seen one in the flesh and worried that it looks a little "brown"

I also have new wheels on my current car which make it look a bit different!

Black with saddle brown sounds lovely. My last three BMW 3 Series Coupes have all been black, but I really like your Silver beauty. May go Silver my self next!!

I would love if the older 335i had DCT, I am just gonna have to go for auto instead and use manual sport as I hate normal manual boxes!!!

Could you tell us more about the difference between M-DCT on M3 and DCT on 335i?

I currently own an X3 with 6speed manual gearbox and sometimes I have problems shifting from neutral to 1st gear. BMW mechanics said that this is a general problem for these gearboxes.

I ordered my 335i with DCT because here we have a lot of traffic jams, the consumption will be lower and because it`s sporty (and it looks better than the manual lever ). I also drove manual gearboxes my whole life, I feel the need for a change!

In the end it`s all up to your needs, everybody here (I hope so) enjoys shifting gears while driving a sports car but still many got the automatic gearbox

I think its a very personal decision, I went from 335I Manual to M3 DCT and then back again to 335I Manual!

I loved the M3 but the DCT ultimately detracted from the "involvement", which for me personally was important especially on a car like that, and I tried sticking with it for several months. I'm sure if I did a lot of city driving I might have felt different, so that is also a factor

I think you have to live with both for several weeks before you can make an informed decision. I won't argue with the technically superb aspects of DCT but at the end of the day I pay through the nose for a BMW because I want to be involved in driving it.

Interesting - and I take my hat off to you for getting what you wanted, even though I'd imagine it hurt money wise

I have to agree, the DCT in my 335i was better than the M3's i tested.

I feel totally the opposite to you! - I went from a manual 335i to M3 DCT as well and haven't missed my old 6mt 335i for a second - and that it coming from someone who has never owned a non manual car in 15 years of driving.

OP - Take a long test drive in a DCT 335 and then make a decision. Just for the record i have been and continue to be amazed by the DCT.

I really want DCT but there is just too few 335i about with it [on auc]. I drove the automatic and thought it was OK when in manual sport mode using the paddles, I know it wont come close to DCT but I prefered it over the manual

Thanks again for the feedback. Im still liking the idea of a DCT, for the change if nothing else.

I will be having a long test drive before making the final decision (I wonder if BMW will lend me one for 2 months just to see if really do like it )
