Credit to anees for this ...

If you have an LCI, then your car should be wired for ethernet already. Otherwise, connect the CIC to the OBD. See the attached pic ( not mine ). 8, 12, 13 and 11 are pins on the OBD socket.

You will need an RJ45 ethernet to OBD cable.

Make sure your EDIABAS.INI settings are for ethernet ( ENET ) and that you IP settings on the laptop are set to automatic. In this case, your pc will get its IP number from the CIC unit.

In WINKFP, make sure you choose ethernet as the interface, and you would flash the CIC in the following order:

63
62
A0

Note, when 63 finishes, DO NOT exit WINKFP, but just process the next module 62, and so on for A0. Only when A0 is finished, then you can exit WINKFP.

If you exit WINKFP after even a successfull flash of 63, there is a chance of bricking the CIC. Then you would probably need an ICOM to get it out of bootloader mode.

And make sure you use a proper power supply...not battery charger !

That's the one. I moved it out so it's in its own thread and I think I get the diagram. Has anyone that's tried this succeeded though ?

Has anyone ever accomplished this? I tried it but couldn't get it to work.
Auto Negotiations for DHCP never completed. I only got the default windows private IP. If I manually set it to 169.254.199.98 and ping 169.254.199.99 (CIC) I get a response from the CIC.

I used comfort mode and select 6I63 module. I get a error 106 though. Any pointers?

For those looking to get apps/connected drive there are versions of software that have it and those that don?t. Their was a need at one time to get a particular version also because it didn?t need activation codes as well but that?s apparently a thing of the past

Yes CIC software has been "jailbroken" in a sense that all FSC codes are accepted via an exploit that intel123 developed. The exploit requires the newest software revision C1A. The exploit "virginizes" the CIC and will accept partially signed (FSC) certificates for BMW apps, nav, voice control, etc.

You can update your CIC via a direct ethernet connection, however, you will need to use Tool32 to set the CIC into bootloader mode. When the CIC restarts, you run the risk of losing connection with it, therefore, a chance of bricking it.

An easier and probably cheaper way is to get a ZGW module, connect it to the CIC ethernet connections, and then connect the ZGW to your pc / laptop ethernet port.

You can then flash the CIC.

You will need to get a ZGW with MOST connections and ethernet capability.

Zentrale GateWay.

Used to send Power Line, CAN messages, etc.. to the CIC. It is normally found in a 5-series, however, it can work for the E90.

In the F-30 series, the Front Electronics Module ( FEM ) is a combination of the CAS / ZGW modules.

And no, you cannot install an FEM from the F30 into an E90. Therefore, the ZGW will have to do

Would this flash give the opportunity to enable BMW Live for US CIC?

I think so - IVe managed to get it working here in australia(tethered to my phone) its not very useful though in my opinion. the apps is the most useful as you can use it to control music streaming playlists etc. I didn’t use this method above though

ZGW still requires to another module. If I'm going to buy another module, I might as well get a ICOM-B clone.

Anyways... I have spare CIC that I got for cheap at a junkyard so I'm going go out on a limb and do what everyone recommends against and try to do the update with a OBDII cable. If it fails, I'll just stick my original CIC back in.

63 just started flashing so I'll report back with results...

Are you using Bimmergeeks' pro cable by any chance? That should be able to do it (though they understandably don't won't to guarantee that). Otherwise you're likely to run into the D-CAN bug.

Well I can tell you that 63 alone was going on for 14 hours (~70%). My wife plugged in a vacuum cleaner and it tripped the breaker for my power supply to the car so that rendered my cic unit dead... Sucks that I didn't get to actually see if this works... Will try again this weekend as I got another CIC for cheap on ebay.

If your car is wired for ethernet, connect your ethernet to OBD cable to the car and the ethernet port to a router.

Connect your laptop to the router as well.

Switch on car and CIC and wait for a few minutes.

Then on your lapop, run this:

C:\EDIABAS\Hardware\ENET\ZGW_SEARCH.exe ( this program does not work on Windows 10 and it's flaky on a 64 bit Windows version )

Come back and tell us if you see anything in the ZGW_SEARCH screen.

I wired up the ethernet to the OBD. Hooked up a router which shows the CIC reserved an IP address. I was able to see the CIC files via FTP. Running ZGW_search shows nothing in the screen but a Refresh button.

Thanks
