The vacuum pipe you need to move is #4 in the diagram below. It is joined to the plastic union on the vacuum pump by a short length of rubber hose #5 with a couple of hose clips #6 & #7.

Rather than removing the hose clips, I just undid the torx headed screw #3 holding the plastic hose union into the body of the vacuum pump #1. The plastic hose union then just pulls straight out of the body of the vacuum pump and you can move the vacuum pipe #4 out of the way.

I'd be surprised if they had wiped your map as re-flashing the ECU isn't something that BMW do on a whim and it's not associated in any way with your symptoms.

It does make me chuckle that they decided to see if your car was overheating though - they did the same to mine the first time I took it in and called to say that the thermostat was opening and the fans were running, despite me explaining at great length that it was running too cold on the road. I reckon their instruction book only has one page on cooling issues

Well the EGR Stat was faulty - you could blow through it when cold. So thanks for all the help on that!!

Gave up trying to remove the MAF sensor and EGR value - looks way too complicated sorry

What effect has the new EGR stat had on coolant temp?

Will be interesting to see any increase in mpg and intervals between DPF regeneration.

Well the car got up to 88C in about 5 miles today, big improvement. It then stayed between 87-89 all the way to work which is a 40 mile trip.

Drove at a steady 60-65 and got 46MPG so excellent but I did change the airfilter as well which makes a difference too.

Regards DPF regen I have never felt the car do this!!!!

Good result... I'm running a few experiments with my car, getting a new EGR 'stat to see what differences I get from a new 'stat.

Can you give an idea of what ambient temperature you had this morning. I'm at very low ambient temperatures at the present time, from ~0 to a maximum of 6C. So I've got no spare heat in my warm ups whatsoever, an overrun and I see a small drop. No sudden drop outs of temperature, but definitely an EGR 'stat that 'bleeds' cold water, bypassing the main thermostat. I've proven that with some running tests, I'll explain it more, once I've got the whole picture. I want the old and new 'stats in hot water with a thermometer, get some data, before I replace the original.

I do sense my DPF regens', as typically I get a slightly different engine note and the 'box starts holding on to the gears. Exhaust is also very hot and smelly when I have had to stop, just after a regen. Confirming what I sense from the driver's seat.

Hi Pete

I would say the ambient was about 8C this morning. Car is kept in a garage as well so water temp at switch on was 16C. Up to 50C+ in less than a mile.

It's actually very easy to remove the EGR stat and on mine it leaking when cold, easy to blow through it!

remember to order the O-ring as well as the EGR-stat, it's quite cheap.

Good result Rich! Much more like it

Mine seems nailed to 86C so i think this range is perfectly normal. You might see the mpg improve too over the tank.

Mine is only showing 1 - 3C when starting up, and at 3-miles is still only about 50C. The low ambient is a killer anyway, even with a perfect set of thermostats.

Yes changing is a simple job, I've got plenty of new O rings, (checked out the size), speeded up getting the 'stat in the post today.

hi guys, caught up on this thread today. my MPG hasnt been what it used to be, so i got into the diagnostics and went for a drive, I did 25 motorway miles (after it was already "warmed up IMHO" temp stayed at 73 for ages, maximum it went to was 79... mpg for the run on cruise was low as well, 42mpg. i reckon that used to be 47 at least.. so where do i start???

The most likely and easiest one to change is the EGR 'stat. The low temperature does indicate the EGR 'stat is running cooler water into the bypass cooling. The 'low range' thermostat (there are two ranges, 70C & 90C) in the EGR 'stat is likely opening early, or staying open, running an open circuit.

Main themostats do often run low, mine appears to be doing so, at around 85C, so lazy, but not failed as such.

As a DIY job, it is only about 1/2 hour, and you can do it without losing any coolant if you do it right.

Where Rich did, order the part in from BMW and then fit it yourself

Should be very easy but sounds like you have the same problem.

Temp's should be 86-90. Mine is never as low as that, normally 86 but last night it was up to 92.

MPG Should be way higher, mine is the same as yours and i wasn't hanging about.

It's really not a difficult job if you have the right tools. But do it in a morning when the engine is cold and not been driven, won't lose a drop of coolant that way.

Used half a tank of fuel since being done, done 300 miles and 299 remaining. Averaging 44mpg on this tank so far. That's on a 40 mile each way commute each day, not a long run but driving quite sedately.......

I would check the part numbers with your dealer or on realoem.com as they may differ from year to year. LCI model is sure to be different too.

For the record my part numbers were:-

B11.71.7.787.870 EGR Therostat £27.59+vat

B11.53.2.248.435 O ring £0.64+vat

Total £33.88 (no discount...booooo!)

Hi, I am more than happy with the remap, but I thought the fuel economy would improve straight away.

I've ordered the parts so I am hoping my MPG improves

I can't seem to access menu 7.00 in the hidden menu. I can navigate to it but nothing happens when I get to it, it just goes back to time and temp. Any ideas???
