LIDAR Speed Enforcement Coming to PA

Guys, looks like PA is adding the provision to use LIDAR for the PSP

http://www.legis.state.pa.us/CFDOCS/...r=1179&pn=1594

This Bill is as of Nov 30 2007 and the first time LIDAR is specifically mentioned. It does not look like it was approved yet. Keep your eye open for this one

Wow, even more scary is paragraph 3368, section (2), (c), (ii)
Quote:
Upon completion of a training course approved
28 by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Municipal Police
29 Officers' Education and Training Commission, by full-time
30 or part-time police officers employed by the police
1 department of a political subdivision or a regional
2 police department if official warning signs indicating
3 the use of these devices are erected within 500 feet of
4 the border of the political subdivision on the main
5 arteries entering that political subdivision.
This let's municipalities use radar and lidar! Previously, they were limited to vascar and pacing. This is too easy for townies to abuse, IMO.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Actually this law does not allow locals to use Radar or LIDAR it would still be restricted to the PSP.

Now this law will allow a pilot program to allow locals to use Radar which will take affect after June of 08

Ops a mistake on my part, same legislation one is the Senate bill and the other is House Bill. except the House bill is pilot program

But your right it will allow local to use Radar and now LIDAR.

However, this is the first time PA specifically states that the police must be trained. Just another thing to get a ticket tossed if the officer fails to bring in his training recorders.

Anyway, this is the very first time they are going to add LIDAR to the mix. I think LIDAR is the bigger threat since it has lots of potential for error plus the officer can manipulate the gun to cause a higher speed reading, just like they can do with VASCAR but hitting the button to quickly.

PA has had LIDAR forever. I got pulled over by it back in the early 90's.

I really hate telling someone they are wrong, but you are mistaken. LIDAR is a 2000 Technology that police have been using everywhere but PA. Here is the complete listed of approved speed measuring equipment that is or has been used in PA and I asked you to find a LIDAR unit in the list. If it is not on the list it can not be used in PA.

I think you got pulled over by what is know as ENRADD with used to infrared beams across the road to measure your speed, that was been around since 1995.

You are right and I stand corrected. It was the timing device. I got my terms mixed up.

Bad news for us PA residents. There are already too many speed traps. Thanks for the info.
