e9x M3
Anyone considering the move? I'm very tempted but not sure I will benefit from moving to a M3. My commute is 5/6 miles and my 330i barely gets up to temp as it is. I know a few people have gone from 330i/335i to M3's

Unless you plan to enjoy it more than just the commute, I'd say no point. You need it to get up to temp before opening them up anyway hence for a small daily commute you won't see any benefit. Plus fuel economy on a small commute won't be great either.

The sound of the engine is glorious but the fuel economy is terrible. You'll be filing it up all the time.

Is this purely down to poor fuel economy or the fact that it has such a small fuel tank? Presumably a bit of both.
I'm going to be in the market for an M3 in the near future (realistically after my wedding in December). I keep hearing the fuel economy on the e9X is terrible and that is one of the big things that's making me lean towards an e46 instead. But just how bad are we talking and is it that much worse than the e46? My commute is 15miles (in total). I know these things are never going to be an economical daily driver, but if that's what I was looking for in a car then I would've held on to my 320d. |

I'm never going to go near a track. The sensible part of me thinks that the high tax and fuel consumption might start to out way the sound of the V8 in the end.

A guy at work has one, and with the aftermarket exhaust system he's had put on it, it sounds lush. Must cost him a fortune though to drive it to work every day.

My mate had one. Mixed driving he seen no more than 250 miles from a full tank. That's to be expected to be fair, but it's other costs such as brakes which is a killer. Also, he has emptied his tank in 150 miles driving it fairly hard...

Yeah when we drove to the alps in mine we were filling up every 200 miles.
Epic car. I got rid of mine when my commute changed from 40 to 65 miles per day. Made filling up boring. Would I have another? 100%. Incredible car that feels special every time you start it. |

Loved my E90 M3. Was a fabulous car and a late 2011 with a manual 'box. Sure, it was crap on fuel, but I think I averaged 22-23mpg or thereabouts. The noise, the poise and the overall feeling of punting it down the road was fantastic. I will have another one day.

Why did you get rid of it (if you don’t mind me asking)?

I've always kept my eye out for an E92 M3, they just have a special something about them. Currently have an E92 330i as well and best I see on a motorway run is 33/34mpg, otherwise it's late 20's. I do feel like I'm at the fuel station a lot, so it must be ridiculous on an M3.

I think part of the frustration is that I keep looking at late M3's, so 12/13 plates. Most of them are the LE500's which for some reason people decided to spec poorly.

I'm getting about 27mpg with my 330i so 22/23mpg isn't a massive difference.

They took away the fuel cards at work and given that I do 1200-1500 miles a month, mostly private, it was going to cost me more than I wanted to spend on fuel. My 335i is almost 50% better on fuel than the M3. Would take the M3 every day over the 335i mind you.

It's safe to say though the E92 M3 is an absolute beast of a car and a future classic no doubt. I'll probably own one eventually purely for that V8. Performance wise my 330i N53 still puts a smile on my face, but the i6 engine note won't compare to that burly v8 |
