Swirl flaps done...
Just in case anyone was wondering about whether there is a low down power loss after removing swirl flaps I can honestly say no. In fact, I have gained/regained a load of power low down. Now this could be due to me doing the air filter at the same time and I think the swirl flaps were leaking oil so it may be down to that. But certainly I am significantly better off than before.

I had everything cleaned (EGR deleted) and the swirl flaps fixed on my car (they were stuck). Then after driving it for a year I had them removed. If there was a power loss it's too small to worry about.

It was one of the first things I did to my m57 330d. It made absolutely no noticeable difference to performance, economy or drivability that I could notice. They don’t need binning for those reasons though, purely so they don’t get invested by the engine and destroy it. Less than £50 for piece of mind is well worth it.

my last 3 cars m57 ie e46/e90/e92 335d get swirls removed asap,,but when i first got my e46,,as i was removing the manifold,,i noticed that the car already had blanks fitted,,so worth a check before venturing into it

When i deflapped and cleaned the inlet manifold on my M57 330d, i definately noticed quite a drop in torque below 1750rpms. But mine is a manual. The flaps were in good condition overall with hardly any chance of breaking up to be ingested (@115k miles) but they were leaking oil all down the side of the block. I changed the EGR Pressure converter at the same time as it had been thumping for years and started to quack. Over 1750 it revs better/harder. It is remapped to 280hp/450ftlbs approx 30k miles ago. DPF still on.
A couple months later, i renewed the red intercooler pipe and gained some back |

I also think that it's making more soot during stop start driving as the a480/1 dpf high back pressure codes are more frequent...but my driving profile has now changed again from 2x20miles down A roads per week to 2x65mile motorway runs so dpf is nice and clean

Im just going to chuck a spanner in the works here, i just did mine (113k 335d were leaking)
and i have 100% lost some low down torque, if i was to put a figure on it id hazard about 30-40tflbs before 2000rpm |

I've read somewhere on here about this and I think also BW chip tuning mention that they see a loss of low torque but sort it out with adjustments to the ECU.

mines is mapped, was mapped about 4 years ago, id like to think the gap back to its before power could be closed with a tweek of the map but i personally dont think you'll ever get it back to pre delete. Maybe on standard cars the loss might not be as big so therefore not as noticeable.
Put it this way, as these ones arnt know to fall off and go into your engine, i wouldn't of changed them out had they not been leaking. |

Been told to stick a bit of card in between the inlet manifold and the engine when you start to lift it off, in case anything falls off the inlet manifold and ends up going down one of the ports?
Should anything go down one of the ports, can you easily get them out or is it a strip down? Secondly, did you remove the rod that turns the flaps? |
