Wow, sounds like you're going through a lot of oil? I added about 2/3 a quart to my car and it went up to one notch below Max

Who knows, I'm not sure anyone has had a chance to put a quarter million miles on it.

Pennzoil has not had the best reputation over the years. Why even bother? There are some very good candidates for oil out there without stooping to Quaker State or Pennzoil :/

+1, tried Pennzoil synthetic like ~5-7years ago, I really really didn't like it.... (burning oil in a car that didn't with other oils, etc...) never had a bad experience with Castrol in any car, yeah I'm sold to it.

Yeah I'm burning a little oil with the pennzoil platinum. I'll have to add a quart pretty soon. I wanted to try their ultra platinum but they were sold out.

And I always thought that Pennzoil was a Shell company.

These engines and oil consumption is always a weird topic. Mine used more oil when I originally bought it back in 2010, and I am the second owner. Over the years it has steadily been using less and less oil between oil changes. My driving style is fairly spirited, don't track though, but I avoid short drives and am always gentle when the engine is cold. I also change oil halfway between typical BMW servicing intervals. Have always run the car on BMW spec Castrol 5W-30. My E46 330i which is a year older and has 131k km on the clock seems to use a fair amount of oil, almost as much as my ex-E46 320i which had 195k km when I sold it recently. Both E46's also use the same oil as above, and have not once seen any smoke from the exhaust pipes. The 320i had some oil leaks, but even after they were sorted out, and a new PCV, still used a fair amount of oil. It's strange, and then you hear about identical cars that use no oil, or use a lot more.

This is only the second time in 50k miles I've ever had to top it off. I always get it done at 7500 miles anyways. Mostly highway drives for me. My Indy always puts in 5W-40 and whatever brand it is the car has always run well.

Ferrari is a Fiat company.. what does that have to do with the formulation for the brand?

Just thought it was supposed to be to of the line and keep your engine extra "clean" similar to the fuel they use. On that note my car without fail always starts longer with Sunoco no matter the gas station

Yep, cars driven mostly on the open road for long distances at a time tend to typically fair better than the cars driven short distances around town. One other thing to consider is that from the M54 onwards, BMW made a concerted effort to increase engine efficiency, and one of these methods included a reduction in internal engine friction by means of slightly less "tight" fitting piston rings. So oil consumption is ultimately a reality for most of these engines - within reason of course.

That's interesting about the piston rings

Hmm yea my car burns a decent amount of oil but I feel like that's only the case because I drive aggressive. I wanna say I have to put a quart of oil about half between each oil change. Lately it's been more for me due to discovering a new oil leak coming from my valve color.

Did you notice any difference with royal purple, like is oil temperature lower? Wanted to try it, however I've read mixed reviews about it...
Hmm to be honest I'm not too impressed with it. It burns quicker than Mobil 1 and castrol. I feel more comfortable with the castrol. Mobil 1 was meh.

With LiquiMoly 5w30 I don't burn a drop. Since my last change (which also got a full bottle of Ceratec added) it's been about 4000 miles and the oil level is identical to the day it was changed.

Many factors lead to oil consumption, leaks are among the top culprits, abused turbos are probably equally high consumers of oil.

I'd point to long terms oil change intervals leading to degradation of valve stem seals, etc as an equally big factor, if not bigger. BMW has had more than their fair share of issued with valve stem seals :/

Yea I was thinking that due the the aggressive driving I tend to do all the time almost, that my oil would burn a tad quicker then normal. For the three royal purple, Mobil 1, and castrol that I've tried. Castrol has been the best that I have tried. Consumption is minimal compared to the rest. But yea oil leaks are the biggest factor to consumption. Just found out recently a week ago I have a valve cover leak so there's the main factor for me oil consumption burning thru quicker then usual. Curious if an added oil cooler will help to bring the temps down and aid in less oil getting burned. I know it's not needed on an NA street car as I drive an mt 330i but it would only help if anything.
