I assume the new M1 will eventually be LL01 approved. Until it is though, I would only use something labeled LL01 just in case someone tries to bring up a warranty issue.

I'm confused on one thing about the t6? It says it is Diesel Oil? Is that okay to use in a gas engine???? This is so confusing and I think I am missing some piece of information because on BITOG forums a lot of people keep saying to use HDEO oil in gas vehicles and i don't understand how that works?

Is it something like... Diesel oil is > normal synthetic motor oil? so it's safe for gas cars. But normal synthetic motor is < Diesel oil in Diesel motors... so it will kill those motors?? |

Diesel oils have more anti wear additives in them than your typical gasoline engine oil. Most of your engine wear happens when the engine is cold running so the Diesel oil will help at those times as well as at high loads.
That said, I test the oils in my vehicles regularly and I have tested both T6 and M1 0W-40 in my turbocharged rotary RX-8 and the M1 0W-40 has performed better each time. But when I say better, I mean just a slightly better viscosity after 3000 miles and less fuel dilution. And no engines are harder on oil than turbo rotaries. I will run 0W-40 in my 335i but I ran Rotella T6 5W-40 in my Jeep and it held up fine. My father has three Jeeps and swears by T6 in them after close to half a million miles. But a Jeep 4.0 Inline 6 is a pretty low revving bulletproof engine so what oil you use is not that critical as long as it is changed regularly.

I'm running it because of the increased wear additives - I do occasional oil analysis and the reports always come back great. It's perfectly fine to run T6 in our BMWs. As I stated I've been running it for close to 100,000 miles - I'm also in Arizona and T6 hold up just fine in extreme heat. I do oil changes every 6000 -7000 miles and usually use only a few ounces between oil changes. Just went through emissions testing six months ago and passed without any issues.
I'm also on Rennlist which is a Porsche Forum. T6 is also very popular with owners of 996 Turbos. These guys are running over 400 HP in stock form. |

T6 has gotten my Chevy 5.7L to 332K miles, no deposits in the valve covers, and a nice amber at change time. My Saabs have never suffered from sludge issues like many owners experience and my wife's Landy is approaching 200K on it. Of course I use it in my diesel also. I strayed once to M1 after some prompting and getting a good buy... Do any of you M1 believers have an oil pressure gauge in your car? I did an oil change and was off for some dyno time in a boosted toy. By the second run I noticed my oil pressure was lower than normal at idle and temp running hotter than was typical. I abandoned the next pull when the rpms were going up and oil pressure really wasn't. I decided to drive it home, but was in a panic midway home sitting at a light and my pressure gauge was bouncing between 8-10 psi (normally 22-27psi) and there was some valve train noise starting. I got home and shut it down. while waiting for it to cool, I got side tracked. The next morning fired her up quickly with an external gauge under the hood.. Seeing good pressure, I looked inside to see matching numbers. Confused, I went for a spirited ride and there went the pressure again. I drained out the new oil, replaced with T6, and went for a spirited ride. Oil pressure stayed up in normal ranges. I went back to the dyno a few weeks later, and all was well... M1 will never go in one of my vehicles again.

^^One of the guys who is a well known Porsche engine rebuilder over on Rennlist (Flat 6 Innovations) strongly recommends against Mobil 0W-40. He doesn't service cars or do tune-ups, all he does is tear down Porsche engines and rebuild them. He sees the consequences of poorly chosen motor oil day in and day out.

What works well in one engine doesn't necessarily work well in another. Unless they're very very similar. Bobistheoilguy is the best resource if you want to learn more though. UOA is the only way to quantify any of this and even that has limitations.

That's what I used my last change. The engine seemed a little quieter (maybe just because it was fresh oil at the time). No problems with it, and you can get it for ~$22/23 for 5 quarts on Amazon or Walmart on sale
