Clutch slipping - suggestions?

Hi,

Since I had a custom tune the original stock clutch finally gave up so I fitted a 335is USA clutch to my 2007 UK 335i and everything has been running great.

I have had the car on the rollers 406bhp and 650nm torque and my latest re tune feels a little more torquey.

On a spirited run today I noticed the clutch slipping on higher revs 5k+ 3rd/4th on WOT and full boost up to 21psi.

When I stopped at my designation I could smell the usual clutch burning smell.

So... I need to look for a heavy duty replacement that can handle with spare capacity over 650nm torque.

Can I have some suggestions on ones to look at.
I'd need the cluck kit and replacement flywheel.

Thanks.

I think I'd look to have more tolerance in torque for any future changes I may make so the spec 3+ kit looks like the best option for me.

I'd like to keep using a DMF as opposed to a SMF.

Just looking at costs I can get one either delivered to UK or from within the UK.

I believe the factory OEM DMF is a branded LUK part around £420.

Go with what Jeff suggested. I am running 530 + whp with the same setup. If you are going to go high power, thus needing a Spec 3+ you will not be able to use the DMFW. The big power guys (600 +) fought with timing issues causing misses years ago. It was found that the DMFW was the cause. The rule of thumb is < 500 hp DMFW ok. > 500 SMFW is a must. For most street applications the Spec 2 + is the best choice.

Ozzie and Jeff are right, you'll want a SMFW if you're chasing power.

FWIW, I'm running a 335is/550i w/ DMFW over 600wtq but I know it's a ticking time bomb. My plan for when it starts to go is mfactory steel smfw and either (a) twin-disc or (b) spec 3+

The 335is clutch is a great value but ultimately limited in capacity. I wouldn't bother with 2+, I'd go with the 3+ and a SMFW, or if you're going to get real serious one of the twin disk options.

Before anything else do the cdv delete ASAP! It may not fix all of your problems but it will help for now.

You cannot use the factory DMFW past 500HP, it becomes imbalanced and will cause chronic misfires.

I always encourage folks to use the clutch kit based on their actual power output and goals. 3+ is a great clutch but it's made for applications that 2+ cannot hold. The 2+ has better drivability and life expectancy which is why we encourage it.

Thanks for the comments guys appreciate it.
I think the spec 2+ will work for me and the power outputs I want for this car.

@ Jeff - would you ship a spec 2+ to me in the UK?

Good, at least you know that isn’t adding to the issues.
