N57 Inlet Manifold Removal Guide?

Hi all,

My trusty 325d is approaching 90k miles. Its currently in need of a new glow plug controller which I'm planning on fitting next weekend. Whilst I'm at it I'd like to drop the inlet manifold off and clean the EGR and swirl flaps/intake.

It would be really useful if I could find a guide to assist.

Thanks,

Russ

I never found an N57 guide but there are plenty of N47 posts around which should be broadly similar.

Can i just ask what error code you are getting that indicates it is the glow plug controller?

These I'm guessing - 4A74 & 4A79. That's the ones I had and the symptoms were a rough idle for a few seconds when starting from cold in winter. New controller fitted, faults cleared and all good. If your in the market for one, here's the one I bought:

Yeah, ofcourse. The codes I'm getting are as follows:

004A1F - glowplug control unit
004A2E - Glowplug cylinder 5
004A4E - Glowplug cylinder 3

I've rest the fault codes once and the above returned the following morning after a cold start

I’ve attempted this twice and both times I had to abort.

Couple issues I’m facing:

1. What size is the bolt for the oil dipstick? I’ve tried 6-10mm and just can’t get a socket seated on it. It’s very tight and I’m going in blind.

2. What’s the proper technique to disconnect and reconnect the electrical connectors? They have this white sliding mechanism that I have no issue loosening but when plugging back in I just can’t get it fully secured.

3. I’ve managed to loosen all 7 bolts in the manifold but still it wouldn’t budge. I then realised it’s sort of hitting the egr pipe that goes around the engine and is secured with 2 torx bolts. I’ll have to get smaller female torx bits.

Would be good for a how to video even if it’s n47 as this is so difficult compared to the m57 which I didn’t even need a guide for.
