Retrofit Reverse Camera with CIC Navigation E90 E91 E92 E93

This project has been on my list for a while but I could not make media card to work with CIC. After sending it back to korea and seeking further assistance, we established that cable connecting media card to CID was culprit. The company has rotated the cable to 180 degrees so you cannot use OEM BMW cable.

Finally my media card worked after getting a new cable from the company. It allows me
1- Front and rear camera input
2- 3 different inputs connectors (can be iphone, TV or anything)
3- 2 output connectors (for rear screens)

I bought the reverse camera few months ago but could not test it due to the media card not working. Here is the photo of the camera which replaces your boot opening switch.

And here is the final result.

Front dashcam is connected as front camera however practical significance is none.

I went for media card which is expensive (£250-300). But thanks to Lee who gifted me the media card.

If somebody is interested to try this retrofit, then much cheaper route is

- Buying a decent camera
- Emulator to trigger the camera (example, credit to jammy)

Running the wires from the boot to the front is the real job and rest is easy.

Happy with the results.

Another great retrofit mate

Can't wait to do this..... the cheap n cheerful way!

Any tips, especially running the wires from the boot (through that pipe?)? Did you go down the drivers side?

Media card has input for the front camera as well. I have connected my dash cam to it, so when I need to see the view of my dashcam, I can do it through media card.

How does it work?
When you put the car in reverse, it shows the reverse camera. When you put the car in neutral, or D immediately after reverse, it shows the view of front camera (dashcam ) for 5 seconds.

Useful when you are parking in tight spaces.

Media card is not necessary for the reverse camera. If you buy the emulator and the camera, it should be good to go. The link of emulator is self explanatory.

I bought the media card for its additional functions, such as video input, front camera input and video out. I have very similar to this but old model which they have stopped making now.

Jammy
Just ask the seller that his emulator does not/ should not interfere with the CIC emulator, otherwise you will see your money wasted.

About the wiring, I could not pass the wiring through that pipe as its very tight and space is not enough. I still used its opening on both sides but the wire is outside of that pipe.

Since that pipe is on driver side, therefore I went for the driver side.

The power cable for the camera was short. When I connected it to reverse light, it worked fine for few seconds, but then it started having horizontal lines due the pulse width modulation of bmw lights.

Luckily my video cable for the camera had built-in power cable. So I used that and earth was taken from the reverse light. No issues then.

All good so far. Need to check it in the night though.

Good luck with your installation.

TV is on my list for a long time mate. But cannot justify the price tag as I'd hardly use it.

Just been out and tried night time video.
Here is a view of reverse camera during the night time.

And here is a quick glance of front dashcam which is not looking good in comparison to rear camera (however video quality is excellent).

Are the guidelines actually accurate? I assume the red ones are supposed to show a full-lock reverse line. Are they correct for your vehicle? Can you alter them?

The guidelines are slightly conservative and I can ammed it through the settings of the media card. That is next on my list when I get sometime.
However you cannot amend it if your camera comes with these guidelines.

I am not sure tbh. Worth of sending a message to ebay seller and ask him.

Ian, you love your toys. Let Jammy try it and see if it works with another emulator already in the car (cic one). If it does, I do not see why one should not have it considering its not very expensive.

I am in the same situation and hardly can see out of tinted windows during the night. My rationale was the same and plus experimentation

I've been told - the image emulator will work together with the CIC emulator they supply!

So hopefully all these Chinese emulators are the same!

Worst case, I'll need a new CIC emulator!

looking forward to see your installation. I guess with that emulator you get OEM adjustment options as well, such as brightness, guideliness etc etc.
