N54 injectors in N53?

Anyone fitted N54 index12 injectors in N53 Engine? Due to delay of worldwide production n53 index 11 injectors i cant get them,so im considering buying n54 index 12. ive searched all forums and got only one answer from a dude who did it and it did work. Anyone here who did this kind of thing before and managed to get a running n53 with n54 injectors?
Best regards from Slovenia

Suggest you send a query to Bimmerprofs:

https://bimmerprofs.com/

I'm sure they will know if N54 injectors work in the N53. Let us know the answer...

OK I've now been in touch with Bimmerprofs myself and they report several successful cases of fitting N54 injectors to the N53. The only stipulations are:

1) Part number 13538616079 issue 12 must be used
2) All six injectors must be changed to the N54 type.

Bimmerprofs saw live data (misfire counters, adaptations, etc.) and the results were positive. The engines performed correctly, including on stratified charge.

What I don't know is whether the worldwide shortage of N53 piezos also extends to the N54 injectors and whether genuine N54 injectors are any cheaper. My local dealer reports N53 injectors are on back order into January when a consignment is expected in Germany. But because of all the back orders (since September!) availability is likely to remain difficult for the time being.

OP let us know how you get on as there are probably several forum members contemplating going this route.

Edit - I understand N54 injectors are in plentiful supply (but no cheaper than N53).

Hey, i managed to get probably one of the last 6 injectors for N53, index 11,genuine bmw. I got them from Croatia,Europe my friend knows a man who is tight with VDO and BOSCH importer so they had a few left in their storage. Ofcourse i grabbed the opppurtunity immediatly. I installed them, coded them and now engine work smoother and quieter. I have been in touch after my post with bimmeprofs too, they said basically the same thing they said to you . Now i only need to get them NOXem 129 emulator because i have lambda and converter issues due to prevous injectors. Gotta save some money first,as these injectors were expensive ASF.

OK an update. I've started getting a slight misfire when cold. Pulled the plugs and cylinder 4 was black. My injectors are index 11 and have been in place for 60,000 miles.

I've ordered N54 injectors which will be coded in. Hoping the N54s work OK in the N53 as I can't afford to keep leaking injectors in place while the N53 injector back order situation is sorted. If you weren't aware, the leaking fuel can wash the bores, dilute the oil and wreck your NOx cat. My indy has even had a case of leaking injectors causing crankshaft damage due to excess fuel causing too big a bang!

New injectors hopefully going in next week. Will keep you informerd...

U pulled the plugs when the car was cold? Because only a black plug doesnt necessarily means leaking injector. It can be consequence of no spark. So try swapping coils and plugs first.

Thanks but I'm pretty sure it is the injector. When I say the plug was black, it was black around the circle at the base of the electrodes. The electrodes themselves were fine which bears out the fact that once start-up has passed, it runs fine. But I have a set of plugs and coils ready for my next service, so if the injectors don't cure it, they will follow. Thank for responding.

OK an interim update. A bit like buses, the car runs fine for ages then two problems come along at once! My indie ran the codes and I have a faulty injector...but also a faulty HPFP!

So next week I shall be be having a new HPFP and new injectors (N54 type because of the shortage). Thanks to Cotswold BMW for the great prices for original parts. Will let you know how it goes...

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed. Thought after 11 iterations they'd have got it right by now...

Wouldn't a faulty hpfp cause symptoms for faulty injectors? I would just replace the fuel pump and then see if injectors were good or bad.

I'd want a pretty solid diagnosis before dropping 2k+ on it too.

I would hold off on the injectors. New HPFP first, adaption re learn. Give it 1k miles and then see how things are doing.

Can you get a photo of your HPFP when it comes off? Interested to see which part number you have.

Will do. And yes, already agreed with my indy that the HPFP will go on first then recheck injectors to see if the fault persists...

Photo of old HPFP below. The part number was 13517613933 which makes it one of the last but one revisions (sixth out of seven versions).

OK, so a final update. HPFP was removed and replaced with the latest iteration (part No. 13517616170). A full injector diagnostic was then run using BMW software and surprise, surprise, all six injectors were in need of replacement. Early days yet, but so far the index 12 N54 injectors are running OK in my N53 (correct values coded in of course). So based on my experience you can expect piezo injectors to last about 60K and an HPFP to need replacement at around 100K.

One bit of very good news to ease the pain on my wallet…while the intake manifold was off (to remove the HPFP) I asked my indy to check the condition of the backs of the inlet valves for carbon (with a view to a walnut blast if required).

He stated he had never seen valves so clean on a DI engine! Bear in mind my car has done 125,000 miles. The valve stems were shiny metal and even the valve guides were shiny brass. Not a speck of carbon to be seen! I’m delighted, and feel sure that my oil catch tank and partial blanking of the EGR have done a lot to contribute to the lack of carbon build-up.

Curious to know how your indie does this because I have ISTA and I've never seen anything like that. Would be a good thing to run on my car to test.

I will ask. Here's a screen shot of the result of the diagnostic. Maybe you recognise it?

what are you doing with the old injectors, out of interest?

I've seen that ISTA screen, its under ECU functions IIRC and one of the "engine running" tests. I've never run it, though.

Phil be interested to know if the light load/cruise misfire you mentioned in my thread is resolved now - not sure if you remember it but I was asking if it was the nox trap clearning out and you replied yours does something similar, feels like its running lean.
