if anyone actually believes that their transmission fluid is lifetime, they honestly deserve to have their box explode at 200K for being so gullible.

same goes with engine oil. that shit shears alot and does not protect your engine very well after 4-5000miles and should be changed around then.

Yea still remember BMW told me I only need to change your engine oil ONCE every year at the dealer....

You should have your transmission fluid changed every 60k miles.
My friend did extensive research and got ZF manufacturer on the phone. They can't believe companies say it lasts forever. The thing is that audi bmw etc don't train the techs to change the trans fluid which is probably the reason they say it lasts forever.

Again, if you have a ZF6 or ZF8 transmission, change that every 60k at your local specialty shop. If you have a direct injection vehicle, go ahead and get a nice walnut blasting at the same time!!!

BMW never claimed the E90 transmission fluid is lifetime. From my '07 service booklet:

It's the same booklet for both 328 and 335. BMW recommends 100k for both. GM agrees with 100k, ZF says 60k for the theirs.

It actually says in the manual that "lifetime" is 160k miles or some such. So by definition, all fluids need to be changed. Even lifetime ones. I will dig it up and post it.

Just had a oil change done at my local shop and they recommended a Transmission service be done at 100K miles. They said this is a full fluid and filter service and runs about $900-1100. Sounds pretty darn steep to me!

Is this the correct price for this or are they way over charging for this?

I had mine done at 60K for around $750. So yes, that price is too much.

The fluid alone is like $25-$30 per quart - 10 quarts. 2 hours labor, plus filter & gasket for another $50 or something like that.

This has been covered in other threads, but the short of it is 500-750 is the range a dealer will charge. Should be 6-7 qt of fluid (you can't pull it all out) plus the integrated pan and filter that must be replaced. This latter part adds several hundred to the dealer MSRP bill: aftermarket/OEM pans are available from other vendors in the 150 range: kind of sucky as that really is a waste of plastic and such but its how ZF did it.

The CTS kit is about $300 or so shipped for the pan, some extra fasteners and ZF Fluid. Labor for a good tech is 1hr, but 1.5 hr is reasonable too as you must reset adaptations and use the computer if you want to monitor temps (or a IR gun). Not using ZF fluid saves you more $ if you choose to, I chose the ZF.

Given the cost of your time $500 to me is a good deal, 750 makes me want to DIY which I did on my 2011 last year

Report back, did this about 2 months ago.
Bought BMW filter, BMW gasket, BMW transmission oil, fill and drain plug. Did not change the magnet or any pan bolts.

Oil 8L = $70 (8.75 per L) from Endra bmw
Drain plug = $3.75
Fill plug = $10
Gasket = $26
Filter = $38

ALL PARTS ARE OEM, I DID NOT use aftermarket parts.

Changed it within 1.5 hours and updated the transmission software via WinKFP. Now shifts much faster and 3 to 2 jerk is gone
