Hey folks!

I am a brand new member and I'm really excited to introduce my first major automotive build - an N54-powered 1974 Triumph TR6.

I want to first thank MileMarker60 over at TR Register for his S50 swap and a major source of inspiration for this project. I fell in love with that car several years ago and bought myself my TR6 as a result, and I am finally in a position to get rolling on building it out.

I have another thread over on the TR Register here if you want to follow along there as well. I expect to be posting more about TR6-related things there and here, moreso items related to the N54 powertrain and some of the other BMW parts I'll be swapping into my TR.

I also have an instagram account (@grahambuildsthings) that I'll be posting things to once I get started.


Without further ado, pre-project highlights:
-Project car: 1974 Triumph TR6
-Donor cars: 2009 335xi automatic, 2005 M3 manual
-Plan: Swap N54, source and swap the ZF s6-53bz trans, pull rear-end from the e46 M3 and splice onto TR6 chassis


That's all I have to say for now, as I am currently making space in my garage for this project. I hope to get a proper update for yall in about a month.

In the meantime, I'll be using this thread and the other over at TR Register as a Q/A for both my questions and any yall have for me. And please don't hesitate to offer me any advise you have! (Beyond "don't do it" - I am too deep into this to stop, and I've been making these plans for 4 or 5 years. It is happening).

Wow, what an exciting build! At first I thought you were planning on stuffing an N54 in a motorcycle because I didn't realize Triumph even made cars. I look forward to your updates! Good luck!

Hi folks,

I have a few questions about compatible transmissions and standalone DMEs

First, the DME. I'm looking for a standalone unit that does not run any of the CAN/BUS systems - looking for one that only manages the motor.
I have spoken to the people at Kassel Performance and I am pretty happy with what they have to offer, but I'm curious what other people here have had success with for a reasonable price.
I am not looking to do anything properly wild with this powertrain, I'm really just looking to do FBO and a tune to get up near 400hp to start, because I don't want to spend a pile of money on huge power just to find that I can't put that power down.

Second, the transmissions. I'm not sure about yall, but the ZF s6-53bz is IMPOSSIBLE to find. I have a line on two of them, but if they fall through I am wondering what is compatible with the N54 motor?
I have a 420g from an '05 M3, but from what I can see it won't be able to handle the torque from a decently tuned motor, and I know there would be problems with the input shaft male/female ends being backward on the ZF 6 speed unit.
What have yall been able to run?

I say take whatever kassel will/can do, they're amazing. You can be sure it'll come out great.

No idea on the trans, they're may be adapters for other trans but the GS6 is really, really good if you can find one.

Hi folks,

Thought this was a good time to provide an update.

I cleared out a small space in the shop for the 4 vehicles I'll be using for this project and of course, space to move around in (pic 1).


Up front is the project itself, the 1974 TR6. Next to it is my 2009 bone stock, auto 335xi (pic 2), and in back and buried is my 2005 M3.

I have also managed to source the 6 speed, RWD manual trans from this 2007 335i, FBO and JB4 tube (pic 3).


I have a lot of chassis and body work to do on the TR, so while I am working on that, I will also be working on a manual to auto xdrive swap for the '07 using parts from the '09. That should give me a running and driving 335i that I'll be able to enjoy and get a feel for the engine I'll be running in the TR6.

(and I suppose become a proper member of the E90 club!)

That's all I have for yall for now.
Next steps are to take the TR6 body off the chassis and begin work on strengthening that while I work on transmission swap in the '07 335i.

ZF s6-53bz is the SMG correct? Doesn’t it fit on n54 ?

So far as I know, the SMG was replaced in favour of a dual clutch trans from Getrag (GS7D36SG) for the N54. That ZF unit is the 6-speed manual paired to the N54.

Ok and you are saying that 6 speed manual for N54 is challenging to find?
